AH glad you asked! Read this, study this, practice this, and do all the excercises at the end multiple times and you'll be a 100X better driver!

http://www.318ti.org/notebook/shifting/index.html

do not .... repeat ......do not..... even attempt heel and toe gear changes until you can change gears superfast......

Heel and toe changes are pretty pointless on the road anyway - so just don't bother.

BMW clutch and gearboxes are the best I have driven and manual changes are precise, short and quick.

This is making me want a manual again - bloody slushtronic is nowhere near as much fun on the twisty bits.

ps - timing manual changes .... try to get used to the engine note indicating the shift point.... rather than looking at the speedo or rev counter.... this is the first step to making the changes instinctive rather than deliberate.....(IMO)

I think alot of the problem is the clutch delay valve (CDV)! I am seriously thinking about removing it.

In my M5 I never had the launch problems that I am having with my 545i....

...also what kind of "rubber" do you have? I can't wait to get rid of mine and go back to Michelin's....

however, under "normal" driving conditions here in Dallas, I have no problems it is very smooth...

Cheers,

Cheers,

Dallas driving is terrible. I hate it. There aren't any great roads to really get cruising and take some nice turns. I miss the northeast "backroads"

How come so many people are against heel and toe shifting? Obviously hes not ready for it right at this moment... but if he can rev match with gears on a straight road why not practice heel toe? Once you understand the concept you're only adding the braking part to the whole thing.

PLUS Heel toe is not pointless on the road. You can still do it. I do it almsot every day when slowing down to a curve... it doenst need to be agressive.

I still practice double clutching and heel & toe when driving my '02, especially when exiting a freeway off-ramp downshifting to third. Makes for a smoother transition and it makes me feel like I'm extending the longevity of my 30 year old bimmer.
