I've learned a lot the last few months as a "listener" from the pros on this forum - thanks.
My 545 will be on the boat this coming week. I've always sold cars myself instead of trading them in, and I plan to do the same this time with my 97 Acura 3.5RL. 5 years ago it seemed best to list cars for sale in a local print newspaper. How about these days? I'm guessing that an online service might be better, but I haven't seen this discussed yet. I noticed in my quick online survey that autotrader.com seemed to have the most cars listed in the San Diego area. Recommendations?

Are there any tax incentives to do your car as a trade-in in California? In Texas you have to always weigh the benefits between trade and selling yourself, because you only pay tax on the difference between the value of your trade in and the price of your new car. For me that would be about $4500 in tax. Wish I was a S.C. resident where I hear that you only pay a $150 purchase fee, but no sales tax.

I did autotrader.com b/c I had a car that was a little unique and hard to find (good condition, modified, 300ZX twin turbo). It was about $50 for an ad that had pics and lasted for as long as you needed it to. I also listed on Craig's list which is free and pretty busy in the Bay Area and probably San Diego too (did nothing for me in North Carolina). I sold it for a good price to someone 2 hours away in about 3 weeks.
Newspapers are often too expensive for what you get - almost $100 for a 2 week ad. I bet you could go Craig's list and Autotrader (or Cars.com) and do just fine.

Other than the usual local papers, I've heard that posting at colleges, i.e. UC Sand Diego, or any local city college works well as most students looking for a new ride are looking for used cars. Good luck, and I hope your car comes in on time for our December 5th ride in Mailibu!

Hey Black,
Did you attend UCSD as well? I am class of 93' Muir College.
