I am crossing my fingers on the Z4 35i. I've read of a few new Z4s that have had the HPFP replaced already.
Not good for BMW... I do wonder if the V8 has the same issue.....

Retired: 2002 325I, Titanium silver on black leather. Premium package. Absolutely stock and proud of it.
Not surprising, considering all the posts. I am scared of all things "turbo" and will stay away from them, no matter who makes them.

I don't think that turbo engines are inherently bad or unreliable. My mother had a Plymouth Sundance Turbon in the 80s-90s that was flawless. Similarly, my father's last car was a mid 1980s Saab 900 Turbo that also had no engine problems. The problem with the TT Is not the turbos. It is a flawed HPFP design.

Makes you curious as to why the 135/335's don't have the severity of the HPFP as the 535i's do? Same motor so I would assume same Pump yet more failures are least from this board than the other x35 series.
Also in regards to the Automotive ranking people put comfort and handling in the ratings I think. The RFT"s has been the death of BMW. BMW makes people fearful of warranty if they replace it with something else. I was in the tire shop where a woman was told that by her REP. She said she wished they rode better and she has taken it in to the shop for the harshness. They won't blame the tires even though we know they are.
They told her they could replace them with a better riding Non-RFT and she said no she can't BMW told her it would void her warranty!
I wanted to step in but I didn't.
I am glad that I have a good SA or otherwise I would be chewing out SA's left and right for their stupid comments sometimes.

This thread serves as another reason why I am sticking with the 550i instead of a 535i. Not worth the trouble. Now it may be worth trading for the F10 550i next year. I would be willing to deal with FP issues with a V8 TT and 400/450

Ok guys this is my first post on this forum. I'm really considering the 535i as my next BMW purchase. However the more that I read on here, the less inclined I am to pick one up, leaning more toward the 530i, or even a 545 or 550(which I have read both have their reliability issues). My last car was an e46 M3, so I'm no stranger to frequent visits to BMW and high maintenance costs, but I would like to minimize the maintenance costs this time around. I called a friend who is a tech at the BMW dealership and he says the HPFP issues are across all of the vehicles with the N54 motor. He also said once the HPFP is replaced that he is not seeing those cars coming back in with those issues. Has anyone here had any repeat issues with the HPFP once it has been replaced? The reasons I like the 535i was the blend of power(which can easily modded to almost 400 with just a chip and intercooler), looks and fuel economy(without mods). Any thoughts, advise or suggestions(especially from 535 owners)?
