Congratulations on your order...I could not even imagine having to wait for a new car like that! I just bought a 535i and couldn't be happier.

I do have to say...how lucky we all are to be here and debate whether we would get a 535i or 550i. When you realize (and I think we all do) just how much better BOTH of these cars are than the competition...you really do have to smile. When my E34 was hit from the rear (At 250K miles, I knew it was totalled)...after realizing nobody was injured...my first thought was "bummer...I bet they don't have a black/black manual on the lot, so NOW what am I gonna do!" No kidding...within a minute this is what I was thinking. So to you all I say...whatever Bimmer you have...take good care of it and love it...because for the highway, truely nothing else compares!
Good post, Allen. it's good to step back and think about just how GREAT both these cars are. Either one trumps the competition in so many ways.

OK, since I started this, it is time for an update:

I ordered a 535i.

I just did not think that the performance difference was worth the price difference, even though I could afford either. I currently (happily) drive an '05 545i, and the '08 535i will outperform it and I will be satisfied. If BMW were to update the V8 for the E60, I would be a bit annoyed having the "old version" 550i, and if they are going to put it into the F10, well I am there in 2011.

Things like air dams and "engine note" are not as important to me personally, but I fully understand those who do find it important. The bottom line is that the car needs to satisfy your needs, and it is great that there is a car company who has understood us all along. My kinda car is the high performance sport sedan which looks sedate- I just love the "wolf in sheep's clothing" and I think the 535i will do it for me. I hope to have it by mid March.

Thanks again for everyone's input, I'll see ya on the road, and drive safe!
Congrats on the new ride. But I can't help but sense an air of "I wonder if I really shudda hadda V8?" Well, YES, you shudda! Now you're gonna spend the next few years in doubt and regret. Just think of all the exclusivity you left on the table. You're more apt to see an M5 on the road than a 550i.

But seriously, congratulations! Tell us about the car.

No, I really put a lot of thought (and a couple of test drives) into the decision, and once I make one I don't look back. Back when I had my '97 528, it felt seriously underpowered. I tested an '02 530- much better! Then a 540- "WOW!!" -and there was no doubts. Didn't even bother checking out anything except the 545 in '05. But this time around, there was no real "wow" factor of the 550 over the 535 for me. As far as exclusivity, I consider being in a BMW exclusive enough (even though I am in Scottsdale, where entire parking lots are BMW/MB/Lexus/Porsche/etc.). Unless you ARE driving an M5, you practically have to be on the back bumper to read the model number...anyway, this car is for ME, and I care more about how it handles and accelerates as opposed to whether anyone else is impressed with it. As I said before, I prefer a "wolf in sheep's clothing." And if for some reason I am not totally satisfied with the performance (and hey- I am happy with my current car, and the 535i out performs it!) I can always opt for upgrading the chip.

But seriously, congratulations! Tell us about the car.
Thanks- I get it in mid-March, which will come soon enough- I am one of those people who are usually so busy that suddenly it will be here!

Another thing that was different back in 2004 when I got my 545 was in addition to a one second 0-60 spread between the 6 and V8, there was no M5. The V8 car was a no brainer.

It is amazing how far cars have come with this horsepower war. I felt the same way in 2004, the 545 was the only choice. But today there are so many choices.

On another note, no pun intended, I love the sound of my 335i, to me it sounds in between the 545 and an M5. The M5 has a much higher tone than the 545 and the 335 is right between. I assume the 535 has different exaust, I have not driven one.

The 535 is pretty quiet and turbos in the exhaust track don't make for a great sound anyway.

It may be the louder muffers on the 335 coupe hide the turbo sound. I love the way this car sounds. Much louder than the 545.
