Interesting.

PM sent.

The only thing I'm stuck on is the rear diffuser. From the other threads, it sounds like BMW offers this diffuser for the M-Sport with a tow hitch cover. I would just have to order it from them. Is this correct?

I wonder if the one ProMed posted will fit the M-Sport rear bumper.

@ProMed:

Can you modify how low you want the hitch to sit? Do you think it will clear the M-Sport bumper?
Sorry, I'm not sure how much lower the m-sport rear bumper sits. You do line up the hitch where you want it to sit in relationship to rear bumper clearance before drilling. There was no mention of the Curt 11498 needing bumper trimming on the etrailer site.

Also, check out execuhitch if you are wanting more towing capacity w/ a Class 2 hitch and want it totally hidden. That was my #2 option before I decided to go the cheaper route. Another part of my decision was that with the standard US style Curt receiver I'm able to use the hitch mounted Yakima 4-bike rack that I already owned.

Edit:

Found the diffuser and part number. I ordered it from Paul Miller BMW who had it in stock. It's getting to me on Thursday.

Just for future reference if anyone is interested:

E60 M-Sport bumper:

"There's a separate diffuser cover for cars with the detachable tow bar (p/n 51127897216 vs -215 for the normal diffuser) and "trailer hitch flap" (p/n 51127897224)"

You have all been very helpful.
Thank you!

Can anyone offer any advice on using a 7 way bypass relay, powered directly from the battery and taking a switch signal from the light feeds? I intend to use the version offered by Ring:

I just don't want to trigger any warning on the idrive by installing this...

If you use a proper kit. I used the Right Connections one it's really easy to fit and awesome, for example:

1) it monitors the indicator bulbs on the trailer
2) the radiator fan comes on when the trailer is hitched and stays on
3) the rear parking sensors are disabled when the trailer is hitched
4) I think the autobox even behaves differently

Definitely worth the money. I picked mine up for £120 and that's the 13 pin one with the extra relay for switched 12V for a caravan fridge.
