So I've been having this weird issue with my 535i for the past little while now where it would just shut off while driving or idling after about 30 min. It's happened numerous times while on the highway where the car pops into limp mode, shuts down, and I cant do anything for about 20 or 30 min then it restarts like nothing happened. After it shut off, I can still start the car and have it run for maybe 3 seconds then it just sputters out and dies again. I've already replaced the HPFP, LPFP and sending unit/filter, I have the EKPM3 module but I cant tell if its overheating. I logged it and I did find out that my low pressure fuel jumps between 55-90psi on a pull which seems strange and when I pulled out the sending unit I noticed that the drivers side tank was bone dry while the passengers side still had fuel. When I pulled the codes I got 29DC, 29E0, 29E1, 29F2, 2AAE, and 2FCA. I'm thinking my drivers side tank is running out of fuel which causes it to not send up to the HPFP and letting it sit for 20-30min allows fuel to properly transfer or that I might have an overheating EKP module and letting it sit helps it cool off. I'm completely stumped at this point and I'm tired of just spending money and not having a car that I can count on. If anyone has any advice on this before I sell my car that would be much appreciated.

What brand pumps did you use. You should be using OE or OEM. You LPFP pressures should be sitting between 70-80's during idling. Your car is cutting off due to fuel mixture. Check your pumps more than likely the HPFP/LPFP that's your issue.

Interesting that you noticed one side of the tank was dry. Considering that you actually are showing low fuel pressure issues I don’t feel that the tank is actually your problem, but perhaps a different one. You don’t experience this problem differently at a full tank vs close to empty tank of fuel do you?

I've been working on it for some time now and I feel like I've narrowed it down to faulty wiring leading to the EKP which is causing it to overheat. I took it to one shop and the owner has seen an M5 with the same problem catch fire due to the EKP overheating and he mentioned the wiring could be at fault. I pulled the amperage off the module and it was drawing 18 amps and I think it should be drawing around 8-12. There are people saying how the connector on the LPFP tends to become loose over time and that would make it draw more current. I tried looking for a new harness but BMW doesn't really want to sell it and I don't want to pull one off a wrecked car and face the same issue. I've tried 3 new modules at this point including buying a new one and I've had no luck. Hopefully my car will be in the shop sometime soon and I can get this headache figured out.

You gave it a good college try. Let a good BMW indy mechanic diagnose it. I often do that, and then fix it myself, in turn saving a ton of money on labor.
