In my experience, not as a purchaser, but someone who worked on Merchant Ships (some time ago now), cars rarely get damaged at sea. They tend to be well secured and reasonably spaced. Most damage occurs in ports. The worst two examples I have seen is a cargo hold full of Volvo's, every one of them with boot prints all over them - bonnet, roof and boot, and then a consignment of New Ferrari's, rolled off the transporter at a French port (because they are shipped with little or no fuel) onto a Ferry. Back in Blighty, where the cars wouldn't start, they were towed off the ship by a container lorry. Have you seen a towing eye on a Ferrari?? Nope, a hook round the chassis/suspension, and bye-bye spoilers. Heartbreaking. It can also be amazing watching large car carriers unloading. Imagine your nice new car, started from cold, raced down a two lane ramp, three abreast. Sorry, I don't want to put you off imported cars (after all, I have them too!). I hope things have changed over the years.

See that pile of sand? Take a chill pill and bury your head in it until your new, shiny, faultless e60 arrives.

Then enjoy.

i think you just need to do a visual inspection, just make sure the radiator support is not bent, but bmw should take this into consideration when delievering your vehicle. It should be problem free. it make take couple of days to repair the scratch, because your car must be in line for repair. At least you can get some goodies / accessories for the mishap... get all the goodies you can get
BWM does take care of the loading in, what happens onboard when ship reachers port in US that is another story.

I tend to be very paranoid, bordering on flat-out nuts sometimes, so take my advice with a fair measure of caution--but I would want to see the car now, before being fixed. I'm not sure where you are or your proximity to the VPC, so it may not be possible (I'm in NY and the VPC is in Jersey City so I could see my car if need be). I would want a full, detailed description of the damages, photos e-mailed to me if possible, as well a full, detailed description of what is being done to fix the problem. I would want a lifetime warranty on any painting they did so that if it peels, etc., it is covered for as long as you own the car. Then, like everyone else has said, get something in return. The dealer can pass off any cost of what they have to do for you to BMWNA, and so they can do things to make you happy. My order was botched by a combination of the dealer and the VPC, and although it 'appeared' as though it was the VPC that botched the order, my dealer was very good to me in the way they made up for it. I'm sure it's 'nothing', but every once in a while, it's 'something.' Best of luck and enjoy your fantastic car....

I picked a new BMW and a week later discovered that the door, rear quarter and rear bumper had been repaired. The repair was poor, but you did have to look for it too notice it.

I really did not want another repaint, so I accepted the car with the damage. They buffed it and replaced some of the trim that should have been replaced in the first place. They threw in a 6 disk changer for the trouble.

After nine years the paint held up perfectly - no difference to factory paint.

On the other hand I would worry about the paint durability on the front bumper. Its been my experience that repainted bumpers chip more than factory paint. This is based on repairs done some years ago - maybe things have improved. I agree with poster above - find out exactly what has been to the car.

No chance. you cannot enter the VDC, doesnt matter how close you are. and wanting pics and detailed description etc etc. ya... not a chance... you're lucky to have the dealer tell you that it was damaged... usually they dont even tell you that. They'll rather tell you to scram and go buy a Mercedes VDC doenst entertain customers like that... yes we customers are important but not THAT important...
