I was wondering one thing. How come the 535d they tested at top gear went round the track in the same time as the m3. 1.31,8.
I don't get it...really i don't. Don't get me wrong the 535d is a great car and very fast but it's no match on a track (on any kind of track) for the m3. I mean yeah the only advantage it has over the m3 is the enormous torque but that's about all. The m3 is lighter, has more hp (about 70 more) and it's race tuned...it's an M after all. It has also a very high reavvy engine not to mention it's petrol....so what's the catch? How come round that track the 535d is as fast as the m3?

No it was dry!
I have no clue. I looked around in some mags I have and could not come up with any pertinent info. If the track is short, then could the torque of the d have allowed it to keep up with the M3? This possibility is far fetched, but it about the only specifically car-related idea I can come up with--unless the M3 was broken. How does the M3 compare to cars you would think to be roughly comparable on Top Gear?

I dunno...not that fast. The audi s4 managed a time of 1 30.9. Also the 350z and rx-8 both the same time 1.32,8. Weird...i mean come on, i have alot of confidence in the m3. An rx-8 to keep up? Don't think so....

Are the cars all stock? Race prepared RX-8's are very capable. Broken M3? But, if so, surely they would know and not post its time.

Perhaps the Stig drove the 535d and JC the M3.
Anyway why could it not be true. Yes the std M3 is race tuned but lets not forget the 535d is a deceptively very fast car. The TG track has a lot of slow speed stages and this must be where the huge torque of the 5 outweighs the sheer power of the m3. The 0 - 62 time of 6.5 secs for the 535d doesn't really reflect the way the car drives.
Autocar have tested both cars and the M3 easily beats the 5 in all areas apart from 50 - 70mph where the M3 took 7.7secs and the 5 only 3.3secs. Not sure whether thats through the gears or top gear.
