Alright guys, I'm glad you liked this short comparison. I just forgot one thing to mention and I'd like to get explanation! The brakes (front and rear) are much larger on 535d than on 545i, why?

P.S. 1 Alex - 545i is fast - yeah - but not that much. Maybe yours is faster than light but every other can be matched by a regular 535d easily.

P.S. 2 - Both petrol and diesel can be remapped / tuned up so discussion about this is pointless, this was a pure stock comparison. I'm sure it would result in the same for LCI 535d and 550i.
I was told that the brakes on the 535d are bigger because the car weighs much more than the 545i. Heavier cars require more braking force to stop.

Well it's only few Kg more, the difference is not that big.

535d is 1810Kg
545i is 1785Kg

Apparently, that is enough of an increase to warrant bigger brakes. Especially in the front.

thanks for the comparison hondik, nice and to the point.

Re. the brakes. Which part of the brakes seemed larger on the 535d ? According to ETK, the disc diameter and caliper type is the same on the front and rear for both cars...

My friend bought a 545i recently so we could arrange a race and compare these two in real.

My 535d is MY 2005 pre-LCI, 272hp.

So how these two compare?
Consumption
Not so big difference here! Only few liters / 100Km or mpg in real life (applies to urban driving).
This must be a joke. Ok, I don't have 545 numbers in my hand, but if you compare newest figures 550i vrs 535d (probable close enough) difference is huge:
16,9 vrs 9 in city, t
in the highway:
7,4 vrs 5,4 is not so bad, and combined:
10,9 vrs 6,7 is very high.
You can disagree the "offical" figures, but at least I have managed to get allmost figures, what BMW is publishing in different models. And , the difference in these is probable the same.
Person who is buying these days 545i for driving a lot, has so low brain capasity anyway, that don't probable understand these figures

Ecu remap on 545i...... bye bye 535d remaped...

No, wait: remapped 535s is still slower than stock 545i.

Supercharged 545i.. bye bye M5! This you have to say today

You have some problems with maths: 545i : 18-19s (ask Andy545), stock 535d 24 and remapped from 21 to 20.
And turbo diesel hardly remapped is less reliable than stock configuration, so .. I wouldn't want a remapped 535d. Never.

It's not my opinion, but of the chronometer: you can debate with it.

My 535d is MY 2005 pre-LCI, 272hp.

So how these two compare?

Everyday driving
535d is still a diesel. Sounds like a diesel. Don't believe car reviews, they all say that you cannot tell the difference, you can. The sound of the diesel engine is loud - inside and outside. Sounds quite sporty in higher revs. No big ecstasy here.
545i is very quiet inside. Beautiful outside! When you floor it, every pedestrian has to look. Sounds amazing - like a racing car yet not offensive in any way. Makes you wanna hear it again and again. You don't enjoy it very much inside though, only when passing walls, parked cars or other places where the echo has the opportunity to build up.

0 - 100 Km/h
535d torque is fenomenal but 545i is faster - of course. Not by much though, maybe 0.5 to 1 sec maximum.

80 - 200 Km/h
545i was only a bit faster, it would win every time but 535d would still be on its tail. Felt very similar.

Consumption
Not so big difference here! Only few liters / 100Km or mpg in real life (applies to urban driving).

Ride comfort
545i feels much much better and feels much more nimble. Feels also a bit quicker, however the power builds up a bit more linearly and there is no "oomph".
535d vibrates when started and you can still feel it up to 60Km/h. That spoils the ride to be honest.

Weight
545i is 1785Kg < 535d is 1810Kg so no real difference.

I have to add, the 545i was burning outside world like a furnace (hot air above the bonnet and under the car) while 535d turbos were cooling down quite peacefully after the racing. 545i is more like a sprinter, 535d is more like a squash playing manager.

The result? Get the M5, if you can

Here is something you will like ... Enjoy!!
