Driving uphill today, a road I have driven many cars along over the years, booted her in DS and was astonished at the performance. It would appear that the 535d has breathtaking performance on any road whether it be uphill, downhill or flat.

Do you agree?

If this is what BMW can come up with now, imagine what diesel power will be like in say another 3yrs?

I agree. There are times where the gearbox just seems to hit a sweet spot, and the acceleration is breathtaking. One of the guys at work has a 545i, and I had a drive in it the other day. Suffice it to say I did not come away disappointed that I had not shelled out the extra cash. Even the diesel rattle that I was getting at around 2000 miles seems to have gone!
Bad news though...some t*** at the Merryhill Centre keyed my car at the weekend. Price you pay for having a great car.

I am not used to diesels and can only compare the 535d's characteristics against my 330ci on similar roads.

One thing i have noticed is that the 535d changes up a gear whilst going uphill where the 330ci would normally change down or stay in the same gear but use higher revs -

I assume that this is a diesel characteristic due to the meatier torque available low down in the rev range...

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!!!!! Everytime I get to the hill I frequently climb, I stop at the bottom and just fully step on it till I get to the top. SWEET. I am very impressed with this engine.

You probably drove the 545 like you drive your diesel - the 545 LOVES to rev and should be pushed hard for best results.... different to the diesel where you get better in gear acceleration, the V8 works best high up in the rev band.

Arrived back from overseas today - and just HAD to go and play (and wash!!) my baby!

Then saw the news in the UK - oil now $60 per barrell.... and petroleum plants say that diesel may go up to ?1 per litre.

F**K!!! I have an Audi 2.5TDi as well......

(Off to burn some more juice at the relatively cheap rate of 89p per litre....)

Oh - and yes - awesome torque which is instant. Just love playing with little Yellow Seat's!!!

I feel pretty upset by the news about diesel prices; but the performance we get from these engines is MORE than worth it. If diesel was 30% more than petrol, I reckon we'd still be equal. And we get loads of torque
