All these talks about the M5 is driving me nuts. I'm loving my Dinan modified 545 right now but it's definitely no match for an M5. Instead of comparing DMS 535ds to M5s, my contemplation is between potentially supercharging my 545 or getting an M5.

Sorry, this is sidetracking the original subject but I just had to think outloud...haha
Is your 545i a manual one?

I have to admit, the thought of a full manual M5 is quite appealing, but I guess you'd need to wait another year or two before you can pick one up at a decent price...

It also sounds better than anything this side of an Aston Martin, IMHO.
any videos... the only one ive found was from german-car-drivers and the B5 (saloon) sounded far too uncultured for my liking, very very rough exhaust, almost like someone screaming at you :'(

You forgetting the supercharged Jag and Merc V8s... they sound sweeet ?!?

The Jags (pre-new XKR) sound terrible, IMHO - far too much supercharger whine - the AMG 55 engines sound very nice (either NA or supercharged), it's true. Still prefer the Alpina one, though - it's got a lovely smooth deep bass combined with a mid-range rising note that sounds like it's ripping the air to pieces! Nice and aggressive, but never coarse...

Here's a recording taken by a fellow UK B5 owner - been ages since I listened to it, so don't know about the recording quality!

I would have thought that too until last Tuesday when I ran behind an M5 on some fast wide A roads for about 50 miles.
I can only assume he was in P400 mode, but every time he went for it away from a roundabout or an overtake my DMS 535d kept up and he didnt increase the gap what so ever. He was definately trying because I could hear his engine and smell his Cats!
The best bit was my car didnt even feel wrung out and it was kind of effortless!

With this in mind as an everyday driver if you cover long distances, Id take the 535d everytime. However if I wanted a proper performance car in a saloon package Id go for the M5 (Despite the speed of my car, the M5 in front did seem to be having more fun than me it has to be said!)
At least someone understood me. I'm not saying that the 535d is better than the M5, and once i have an M3 (with SMGII) i know pretty well what an M is. I only said that for long trips, city driving... relaxed driving, the 535d is a serious opponent to the M5. For having fun and pleasure the M5 is way head from the 535d, but it still isn't the right car for it too because of his weight. And a nicely remapped 535d can still put some smiles on your face on open roads like autobahn.

I can assure you it is - do you want the RAW file to prove it?

Another pic from the BMW meet today - car was claybar'd yesterday, looking pristine but the journey to the meet ruined it I've cleaned her again now but its too dark for exterior pics. This one taken by a friend at the meet today will give you an idea
