Looking to replace the 535d, and after driving the CSL and X3, I can't bear to be without an e60
Considering getting an M5. Any comments or regrets from those that have already switched from a 535d to a M5?

E60 too big for me and I hate the tail happy run flats and large torque to control, would have loved an M5 but 20K over my budget
I think you will be getting less torque, but obviously a much faster car
Do it

you will have the luxury comfort of the E60
v10 that even beats the M drei, and lots of fun
only thing you may "loose" is the tank but honestly who buy an M5 and looking on tank capacity or cost of petrol, take the plunge and post it up get a RINGTAXI sticker LoL

Thanks for the replies, lol @ Attila
I wouldn't consider a 550i because I'd only move from my 535d to an M. Driving the M is a different ball game, it just feels better driving, more of a drivers car. I love my 535d, but the M5 is similar to the thrill of the CSL but the comfort of the 535

My Ride: 2006 535d MSport ; Retired at 110,000 miles
October 2010: 2010 535d MSport; Space Grey/Black Dakota, Adaptive Xenons, High Beam assistant, Prof. Nav, Voice Control,SAT, Adaptive Drive, Powered boot, Comfort Access, Climate Comfort W/Screen, Surround View, Side/Rear Sunblinds, Comfort Seats, HUD, Active Cruise, TV, Prof Loudspeaker, Night Vision, Lane Change warning, 4-Zone A/C, split rear seats, Speed Limit Display
I and my business partner both run E60s; he has an M5, I have a 535d ( he started with a 535d, then changed to an M5 year ago)
The M5 is awesome; its like driving a full on sports car, but with none of the drawbacks. Compared with the 535d, the handling is much more taught - less float, sharper turn in, and if you are really pushing on, less understeer( although this has only really shown itself on track days, you wouldn't be driving that way on public roads ) - but with less compliance on poor roads, although for such a performance orientated car its not bad , not that different to the 535d on run flats.
Amazing noise, and the throttle response is incredible.
Dream car...I was going to upgrade as well....but....we both cover around 25000-30000 miles per year. The running costs of the 535d have been pretty reasonable, but the M5 is scary...services around 12000 miles ( 18000 in the 535d ), and more costly. Once I factored in the extra insurance and fuel consumption - he's getting around 18-19mpg ) it means that the real premium isn't the extra ?25k or thereabouts for the car, over a 2 year period its a lot more. Also, the retained value of the M5 takes a real beating if its covering above average mileage.
I just wish I'd been the one to change first :-)
So if you are going to be using the M5 as your day to day car and do a reasonable mileage each year, I'd suggest you get the dealer to go through the overall running costs in real detail so you don't drive into some surprises 6-12 months down the road.

My Ride: (E60) 535D M-Sport (DMS)
Just do it, as you'll love it when you do & always regret it if you don't.
The +'s are very obvious, that being almost everything about the M5 (& the 535d M-Sport is a fabulous car). The driving experience, power, noise, toys, chassis, suspension, a proper M & don't forget DMS can work magic on M5's as well.
The -'s are the size of the fuel tank which is fine in a 520 or a 5 Diesel, but woeful on the M5 as they're the same size across the range so expect a range on no more than 240miles when cruising & as i think you already know, i can only manage 3-4laps of Nordschleife on a full tank of fuel. Also factor in higher insurance (you'll need some kind of Tracker system) & although they hold their value OK in % terms, being a higher value car the actual ??'s they lose is fairly high. Other running costs are fine (servicing & brakes etc.) however they chew up rear rubber every 8000 miles & fronts about every 16000 & if you go for PS2's (which you must) that's about ?600 for 2 tyres.
Did you not notice, that mine is for sale & what a bargain as it's the cheapest for sale in the UK right now & has the highest spec by far.

Thanks for good info. I am currently thinking of upgrading my 530 xd to M5. I drive quite lot, around 60 000 km per year. Diesel is pretty easy to drive, I can make 1000 km with one tank and still usually refuel every wednesday and sunday And x-drive is absolutely great. But I still miss more power...one option is to go to new M3 and have fun & track days with it. After all, it doesn't matter what engine you have in E60 if most of the driving is running a motorway with constant speed. Well, I have to test drive the M5 and feel the power by myself...

My Ride: E60 M5, F85 X5M
I've also been contemplating upgrading my 2004 545i for a slightly used M5. I've done a lot of upgrades to the 545 but in the end, it's still and will never be an M5. Don't get me wrong, I love my car and all that I've done to it...she's a beast and handles awesome. But everytime I see an M5, it's like being a kid again and staring at those exotic car posters in my room.
I think you should go for it Steve.
