As above for the BMW line, though some indi's recommend 80K miles and some say 100K miles. Personally i have around 84K miles on mine and i have no intention of changing till around the 100 mark, though having said that the chances of me still having the same car by that time are very slim knowing my itchy feet.

My Ride: 03/2005 535d M-tech Sapphire black, Beige dakota leather, 18'' Star spoke style 124, Navi professional 8.8', active steering, dynamic and adaptive xenon lights
Changed mine at 90K miles. Did already almost 10K miles after change and can't feel or see any difference.

My Ride: BMW 525d SE
Just had mine (525d 2005) changed yesterday with an engine oil change by BMW Doncaster UK. They gave me that "sealed-for-life" nonsense. But I insisted.
2 litres of MTF transmision oil with labour included ?115.00. It would be more if I had the filter and oil pan changed too.
The old oil was black and thinner than the new stuff with small metallic shavings.
My vehicle has 87k mile on the clock. I will repeat this at the 170k mark and change the other bits too (pan/filter).
"Sealed-for-life" only applies to the 1st owner of the vehicle who often change cars after 2-3 years/30-60k miles, and dont need to worry about gearbox.
After three years transmision failure becomes a non-warranty issue and costs at least ?2000 to fix. Now can you see why BMW dont change the gearbox oil regularly. Dont get me started on thier 20k engine oil change recommendations!!!
Come on BMW wake up and smell the coffee...some of us do like to hold on to thier vehicles longer than a few seconds! Every time I go in for a service...Sir would you like to test drive our new ....". I get a new car brochure sent to me practically every week!
No thanks I am perfectly happy with the car I own thank you. Its a shame I have to request my own maintainence!
My prior car..a Lexus LS400 1992 model had a schedule tranny oil change every 100k and I managed 289k miles out of it till some idiot wrote it off. Never had any issues with gear box or engine in that fabulous car. I plan to keep the e60 for 5 more years/250-300k, which ever is first.
By the way, gear changes are silky smooth, and the engine is purring like a kitten with the new engine oil.
What do people think?

There is also another thing: it seems the Germans design these cars with their "typical customer" in mind - lots of Autobahn driving, and long distances as well. Gearbox oil, DPF, battery characteristics - its all set up in line with those expectations. As soon as you start driving the car mostly in European city traffic with lots of traffic jams, stop-and-go and short distances, these and other components in the car start f***ing up.
So you need to take preventative measures - change gearbox oil, charge your battery now and then, go for a motorway run just to let your DPF clean itself up. Otherwise you have lots of headache and some nasty bills coming your way.

Gearbox oil in bmw is lifelong. It is changing only whey you do some repair with your gearbox.

I just had a chat with my friendly SA, and I booked an oilchange for the gearbox a long with a regular oilchange for the engine.
He said that even though BMW says it's a lifetime oil, he recommend privately owned BMW's to get the gearbox oil changed at every 100k km's. On E60's driven as taxis (common in Denmark), he recommended a 50k km interval between the changes!
