Hi there,

My car has developed a noisy rattle from the exhaust when warm and idling. It can't be heard in side the vehicle but people keep telling me the exhaust is worn out when they are close to it outside!

My local specialist looked at it on its last service and said it was a valve which is in the exhaust to improve noise or emmisions which when he lubricated it fixed the problem, however only a few weeks later it has returned so this was a temporary fix. He thought the only permanent solution would be a new exhaust!! This would be a shame as he exhaust is fine apart from this and replacement is very expensive!!

Anyone else suffered with a similar problem and managed to solve without exhaust replacement? Is it possible just to replace the dodgy part?

Cheers in advance.....

You can remove the butterfly valve IIRC.......no more rattles then

I would have to search the thread on E46 forums but IIRC this butterfly valve thingmy has a couple of functions, noise reduction at low RPM (which maybe fiddles with torque ?), emissions maybe ? cant remember, I can remember some E46 owners with the same or similar problem to you removed the valve with no problems tho, I would gladly step aside and be wrong if someone knows better, I'm just recalling from a post a year or more ago elsewhere

I have a faint memory of this unit being vacuum operated or similar and also sticking partially closed in some instances as well btw....will see if I can find the full info for you.

EDIT:

Might be some relation to this one I found.......

Further down that thread if you search......

i could hear this s*** noise coming from wot i thought was the Gearbox coz it only dont it from 1st-3rd gear changes when changing gear between 1k-2.5k like a rattly noise and being that ive got the smg i thought its gona be a pain in the arse to fix. Turns out its the exhaust making the noise coz of the butterfly and he demonstarted to by removing the vacuum pipe! once removed the noise went... they also told me if i wanted the noise removed then i needed a 325 exhaust which BMW's wont be prepared to pay for coz there is nothing wrong with the exhaust and therefor isnt covered under warranty!

Also the 325 exhaust wouldnt be a nice rumble like the 330's one which is pointless having it on then. Now im gona go and get a screw and take the damn pipe off and plug it!
Once ive plugged the pipe do i just start and rev it slightly for the butterfly to open and then it stays constantly open?

Many thanks guys, damn im glad i joined here.

Thanks very much for your time looking at other posts! I will get it looked at again next time it goes in and will report back to the forum if they can solve it as described!
