No matter how hard I boot the car I have never seen any black smoke come out of the back...

Considering that this is my first diesel, I was expecting a little black smoke at least every now and then despite the particulate filter (which must be working overtime ) -

Incidentally, I drive says the particulate fileter is good for something like 120k miles - think that may be a bit optimistic

If I keep booting the car, will the particulate filter eventually give up the ghost early and will I be leaving clouds of black smoke everywhere?

Black smoke its either dead turbo or very very old engine. So no way for black smoke on your E60. I did 150k km on 2.5TDI Audi, with many many starts and very heavy foot and never had a black smoke at all.

Do not worry, your BMW diesel will never produce black smoke unless some mechanical failure (most likely turbo).

IMU,

as a first time diesel owner I was expecting the same. I've convinced myself after frequent cleaning of the chrome tailpipes that what does come out is almost transparent/invisible with a slighly yellowish residue left being left on the pipes. All in all I'm impressed, if I could get rid of that every so slight rattle I'd be a 100% convert

Lower quality diesel smokes more

I think the particulate filter has to be changed when its life is up

I don't have the particulate filter :'( Car was build 2 (!!!) weeks before the BMW's diesels got that

But I do got some black smoke comming out sometimes, during heavy accelrations (from 100 - 160 km/t).. There isn't much of it, and I can only notice some smoke, sometimes when driving behind our E60 530dA...

I think it's nomal, on our car..

Thanks to the the particulate filter you will "NEVER" have
BUT if you tune it more than 80% (manily the Nm) you will get it.

My Audi 2.5TDi V6 (Now 19 months old) always gets a foot-down=black-smoke treatment from me when I can get it off 'er indoors!

But then, she rarely prizes me from mine!

Never seen any black smoke but on last 530d I did notice whiteish smoke in the headlights of cars I was blowing away. The problem stopped after they were specs in the distance

I took mine to the registration inspection and they equipment were not able to detect any particles! It gave "check nozzle" info, nothing else. So they had to try it in some other car if detector was faulty... was not!

My e60 was first in that inspection depot.
