Of course the 330xd is the faster the 535d only does 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds
I can't detect any sarcasm there Merv, but I was under the impression that the 535d could hit 100k (62mph) in 6.0-6.5 seconds. Regardless of this, i think the 535d would still be able to eat the 330xd for breakfast as it has far more mid range power/torque and would pull away after 60mph.

I assume the 330xd is a 330d with four wheel drive, which isn't available here in the UK, and I suppose this will give it a traction advantage, and it's lighter, but I don't see how it could be greatly faster than the 535d?

UK BMW figures:

535d ** 0-62: 6.5
** BHP: 272
** Torque: 560nm

530d
** 0-62: 6.8
** BHP: 231
** Torque: 500nm

330d ** 0-62: 6.7
** BHP: 231
** Torque: 500nm

I shall assume the 330xd has the same engine as the 330d, and the only difference in performance should be through 4 wheel drive traction.

Where'd that 7.1 figure come from? If anything the BMW figures are conservative!

He had to break the 535d first though

It would be a bit magical if this was the case since the weight is probably quite similar and the 330xd is one turbo short

Nope. The current 530d and 330(x)d have the updated 3L engine with lighter block and piezo injection system. The 535d has the 'old' engine...

Apparently the new engine is noticably better than the old one is terms of refinement, noise and low-end torque. The gap between the 530d and 535d closed... Bring on the new 535d

I have driven my work colleagues 330D Msport manual, I agree it feels like a rocket . If the 535d launched properly however, I think it would just be ahead at 60 mph when compared to the 330xd.

agreed , but with all that toque going through the back wheels i really do not see how it would launch nicely unless it was wearing slicks or spacers and 315s on the back

Yeah with such a torque monster like a 535D it would struggle to put its power down in any conditions... as a straightline tool the XD is definetly worth it, But on awd cars I think they still have quite a way to go to match the poise that rwd offer's and the involving drive. Are you planning on chipping or taking your car to DMS? You really would have something to worry a M from the traffic lights
