Hi,

I was just wondering whether the automatic gearboxes in the 530d and the 535d are the same? Does anyone have information on how much tourqe and hp they are speced for?!

I can't tell you if they are the same,
What I know is that they feel completely different.
I have driven 4 weeks in a 530d and I own a 535d
and the 535d transmission feels much better.
I don't know if this is software or the combination with the engine.

Thanks! Then I guess that the gearbox should be able to take at least 272hp/560NM. The remaining question is then what it is speced for?

Mdoorman,
Please can you tell me in what way the box in the 535D feels better than in the 530D.
I am meeting with ZF next week to test drive the car and to discuss the various issues eg. unpredicatble gear changes, revving way to high at times, box cant make up its mind after coming to a near stop and then accelerating etc. etc.

Regards

Streak

As specified on the Hompage of ZF (www.zf.com) the 6HP26 can handle up to 600NM.

The 6HP26 is also used for the 525d and 545i not only for 530d and 535d.

I would have to agree that the gearbox works better on the 535d than the 530d having first hand experience on both. On my old 530d the car would stick in gear at low speed, refuse to change into a higher gear when the engine could easily handle a higher gear and kept changing down the gears whilst driving down hill. The most annoying thing with it was on the motorway when you pushed gently on the accelerator the box would change down. Had to select M6 all the time
In contrast my 535d is perfect! In D it will select as higher gear as possible, stay in 6th on the motorway using the torque even when pushed and coast down hill just like an auto should do!

My Ride: Oxford Green E60 530D with tuning box and all the toys!

I have tried a 535 sport for a day and normally drive the 530D with a tuning box. I think the differences are not down to the gearboxes but the way the engine delivers the torque. The single turbo version throws a real punch just over 2000 rpm, so when you are cruising on a motorway, you are around this engine speed. Consequently, putting your foot down a little can sometimes, if you get it slightly wrong, deliver a whole lot more power than you might expect. Whether this accounts for the changing up/down issues Merv is reporting seems unlikely to me as mine doesn't behave like this. The 535 has a much smoother power curve as you might expect and the surging effect in the 530 is more noticable with the tuning box in place than without. All in all, the performance across the range in the 535 is more refined. Putting a box in that turns it into an animal!

I haven't experienced any of the trouble Merv is writing about with or without the tuning box in place - I wonder if the adaptive system might be responsible - they are exactly the same gear boxes in both after all.

I suspect the software must know what engine you have and adjust the parameters accordingly. The shifting patterns must be different for a V8 and a diesel

Merv - thats intersting. I've never really notice the same on my 530d. It sits in M6 on the Mway quite happily (or at least I think it is as you cant easily tell) - with normal(ish) acceleration it will stay in M6 and only change down if you demand more of it.

Maybe it has something to do with the way it adapts to your driving patterns ?
