IMO at 16, from a standpoint of your age/experience, I would be looking at the new 3 series, like a 320i.

Safety ? ... lets be honest, at 16 this is rather relative....you have more chances at being tempted to drive fast with a big V8 yourself ( with no experience might I add ) rather than your parents feeling safe that you are in a big car...wrapping yourself around a tree will hurt in ANY car ( touch wood BTW ). Money aside, I would be looking to buy my kid something safe and stylish appropriate for age/experience...

But, hey, it's your life and your parents money...good luck anyway with your choice !

OK, now I will actually try to be helpful

you want an evo, g35 (or Sti whatever that is) over a 5 - No way - The 530 is a great car - I plan to give mine to my daughter when she turns 16 (if I can not find the above mentioned cement mixer) - As fr as teh 545 vs 530 - does nto matter - both are fast enough to seriuosly hurt someone if not driven appropriately - so look at the options and color you want

if price is an issue the 530 will be cheaper

I do know what you mean about wanting something else besides a 5 - It is kind of an age thing IMHO -
here's how I sort of view it

0-15 - BMW diecast model
16-30 someting - 3 series
30something to 50 something - 5 series
50 something to ??? - 7 series

that being said the e60 is the best looking car out there

rememebr this is just an opinion and I do not want to offend anyone

BTW I read cattman's post as a compliment to you - it was not meant to offend
And we do get off topic alot - especailly if miis525i is involved in the post

AND finally I agree with your parents - the e60 is a safe car
^^ sorry if i started to get anal about it.

yeah i never thought of it that way. 530i and 545i are fast enough to hurt someone.

Yadamean, do I smell Asian about you?

Cattaman was actually complimenting you and dgjk has some very good and realistic advice; so do many others on this board. I've always wanted a four door so my I didn't have to open the doors for my friends versus a 2 door. Get the 530i so to not be tempted to impress your friends with speed if you haven't gone over the "peer pressure" thing. I can relate to your parents and myself when I was a young pucker like yourself.

I think I know why you are interested in the sti, g35, etc. type cars . . . and you know your parents are right to steer you away from them. Your parents probably want something as safe as an Hummer H2 but don't want you to have a vehicle so large you'll be taking your friends for joy rides.

hahah i guess you do smell asian?

ok let me announce this.

im sorry for taking cattamans comments the wrong way. i guess i misunderstood the whole thing.

ill most likely stick to the 530i. V6 is already strong. V8 is def something im used to though.

but V6 will do for me. yeah i guess i would want to impress my friends if i did get a really fast car.

Actually, its not a V6, its an I6 - inline 6.
6 cylinders in a straight line instead of 3 cylinders on each side forming a V.

Another plus for the 530 is that insurance may cost more for the V8 (some insurers charge more, some don't).

def ok!

hey man i was in your shoes when i was younger - parents wanted to get me a new 3 series but all i asked for was a civic. (i'm asian too btw). i felt guilty about accepting such a nice car, but now that i'm older, i can understand the parents' point of view (also because i've seen an accident where a civic lost its entire front end when it hit a nyc taxi cab, and the cab only had a few scratches).

it doesn't really matter what car you get, improving your driving is the most important. if i were you i'd use the money you're saving and enroll in a skip barber driving school or a similar class. learning how cars behave in emergency situations and in conditions that you cannot practice under on the street is the best thing for your safety.

No No no... you're not understanding it properly I think... Its still a 6 cylindar... V6, I6, Flat 6 its just the way the cylindars are positioned. Personally to me an I6 is better than a V6. BMW is famous for their I6s.

I think he was sarcastic when he said he didn't want it anymore

You're sorta correct that I6 is better than V6's. I believe I6 was the traditional choice for race cars that had to have 6 cylinders. Back in the day, I6s were known for power and V6s were known for economy. Nowadays it doesn't really matter as much though, but when I think of I6s, I think of great motors from the old Bentley Boys' Le Mans racers to the current M3 engine.
