The 530i is looking very attractive...

In Auto guise you get mpg's 26.2/50.4/37.7 vs (530d) 31.0/54.3/42.8 - not a big difference anymore! For my fairly low mileage I wouldn't miss my diesel apart from the turbo oomph but the sweet smoothness and lack of lag might well be worth it! I also note both models sneak in band E CO2 so they'll escape the current major wrath of tax hikes for a little while longer! In fact I think the LCI 530i betters my 2003 530d for consumption!

I too would like the 535d but the price differential is really at a premium now! If I couldn't justify a 535d then a 530i might just do the job! It's close to ?3.5k cheaper!

We are not taxed on CO2 here yet, but it looks like we will be fairly soon. Currently, it's based on cubic capacity (http://www.eforecourt.com/php/cartax.php). The EU are pushing for more CO2 tax (and tax breaks for car manufacturers who hit the magic 120g/l target).

I wonder what the residuals will be like on an LCI 530i...
Do you think it will be painted with the same brush as the current 530i (i.e. dealer giving low trade-in value as it would be harder to shift than a diesel?).

Surely residuals are set on how attractive a car is to buy.

If the 530i is "as attractive" as a Diesel then do the maths.

But will the dealer or the punter really differentiate between the N52 and N53 engine?
You and I would, because we are studying the minutae of the specs... but what about the everyman?
Would you buy a 530i ABC?

Agreed, but I still think the mindset will prefer diesels. However, a 1-2 year old model could be a bargain...

Firstly, apologies for my cack handed use of English grammar. Note to self - must proof read more.

Anyway....
Residuals are something I must consider, being a private purchaser. If the general concensus is that a 530d will fair better than a 530i then this is vote for the diesel camp. However, did the petrol 530i always suffer in the residual stakes due to the considerable differences in fuel consumption and CO2, which has kind of been eradicated with the N53 engine, or will the preconception that diesels are more fuel efficient prevade??? I'm second guessing the future here.

It does appear however that BMW has seen an opportunity to extract more profit from the 535d. In percentage terms it's way up on the 530i and 530d yet you don't seem to get a lot more (lane departure control). Pre-LCI ,at least you got the extended air-con which was worth a few bob.

Scouring the Internet brokers I figured I could put a pre-LCI 535d M-sport on the road for just over ?38k (leather, 172M alloys, sun prot. glass, BT prep. wood trim & DAB radio) Even with a sizeable double digit discount the 535d LCI equivalent would be touching ?40k which is really pushing my budget.

What to people think would be quicker in the following scenarios 530i or 530d (both autoboxes and forgetting remaps)
(a) 0 - 30 mph
(b) 30 - 50 mph
? 50 - 80 mph

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Nice to be in this position though

Final question - does anyone know if the cost of options are going up too?

my advice ,prejudiced of course is the 535d ..... when you go to sell it on either px or private you will have the best price around,especially if you get a high spec of must have extras. media visibility ,hud.logic 7 ,leather.
this is what i do.
1......when you go to buy .....
2.get the pxchage price for your car first...
3.spec up your car that you want.
4.choose colour options .
5.pick a slow time for sales.
6.get a price on a nearly new or demonstrator.
7.recheck your trade in value..confirmed against the car.
8.most important ......back off
9.have a cup of coffee think a bout it walk back to the salesman!
10 say over the top .......will you look on the factory list for an unallocated car with the spec you requested.?
11. if he wants to selll the car he will give you a cjhoice of 4/5 cars near your spec at a nock down price..
best of luck
you could be lucky and get the exact car you would option yourself ,but it will be a lot less money and will arrive within days most likely.
