If fuel consumption is a consideration, may I suggest that you take a genuine test drive in all 3, resetting the mpg computer 1st. They will all be way off what the book says, this may help to make the decision easier.
I'm not trying to make a decision...
I just want to know the technical aspect of the relationship between CO2 emmissions (g/km) and Economy (l/100kms)...

P.S. Yes, I know only too well that the advertised combined figure may not reflect the numbers you get in your own car but some people get better, some get worse and perhaps some even hit the combined figure on the nose (sometimes). This depends on how you drive, what kind of roads you drive on, what weight you carry, the ambient temperature etc. etc. Your tip to take a test drive and reset the computer just won't work as (i) the computer isn't very accurate (ii) the sample data would be too small... (iii) people rarely drive a test drive car as they would their own

I will not compare diesel vs petrol that is "stupid" to do, but 535D I would get if only 3000 pounds more, come on big engine, big brakes, exhausts etc.

I will in 2010 or 2011 buy my next one, either new F10 or "old that time" 535D and still E60. Now I have the E60 530d 37k kms, remaped and never had any turbo lags may be lucky production (07/2005) and the tranny had no issues either, ...yet.

535d & 530d share engines The 535d just have an additional smaller turbo that kicks in at low revs (iliminating therefore turbo lag).

a remaped 535d will kill a petrol 530i and would give a V8 540i a good run indeed.

If fuel economy and CO2 emmissions are important to you I would dismiss the pre LCI 535d and just look at the 530d and 530i. having said that the 535d is still a great car.

I currently have a 530dA with about 90k on the clock and turbo lag is not an issue for me, I drive a mix on in and out of London and I am about to change and have a similar dilema... 530dA M sport with 192 rims or 535dSE ....or even the 530i. I wish they had released the 535i!!! I am inclined towards the 535d.

I have a 218BHP 530d auto. I've not noticed significant turbo lag. It does suffer a lot of off boost lethargy below 1800RPM, but that's quite different, and not an issue at all during spirited driving (plenty enough gears to keep the revs up). The torque converter can behave very oddly, but again, that mostly goes away a little above 2kRPM. It's a plenty fast enough car for me, but it does run out of steam at the top end (and the top end is not so very far away). So whilst it provides entertainment from the turbo-torqued kick in the bum, it takes it away when it runs out of puff early.

Given the new line up of engines, I'd be strongly motivated to test drive both the 530i and the 530d. The claimed economy of the auto 530i is now incredible, and you get a proper rev range (at the expense of the turbo kick in the bum). Only a test drive can tell you which you prefer, and what the real economy is that you're likely to get out of them.

My experience with my 530d is that its economy is fabulous on long dull constant speed motorway runs, but on shorter journeys a combination of the weird torque convertor (hopefully now fixed with the LCI) and the fact diesels take an age to warm up, mean it's economy can be "disappointing".

It's a much closer thing now than it used to be IMHO.

A remapped 530d would see a marked improvement over standard, whereas a remapped 530i would see a small improvement.

I have just that page open:

http://www.e-maps.co.uk/products/BMW...ies+%28e60%29/

Though the figures enable certain comparisons, they don't answer the questions.

One would assume, to an extent, that if all vehicles were remapped that we would be back to some version of "square one".

No....

If the petrol engine is a non-turbo, then all the remapping it is change the fuleeing profile; manufacturers tend to run the engine a little lean to get the best results from emissions and fuel consumption - remapping delivers the optimum amount of fuel for . This means that the opportunity for power increase tends to be relatively small.

The diesels are turbo charged....which gives the remapper a lot more to play with.....its still about getting more fuel in per combustion stroke, but with the turbo they can play with boost pressure, overrun settings etc...DMS for instance can get well over 400bhp out of the 535d...they don't because it wouldn't last long before the bottom end or the transmission ate itself.

Now when the 535i appears, thats a petrol turbo.....and that opens up a whole new realm of remapping possibilities.
