I noticed that in the morning, when I start the engine it makes a raspy sound briefly , as its turning over. Its as if something is rubbing or theres some resistance. Its only really apparent when I have the drivers side door open otherwise I can't really hear it. Its definitely coming from the engine compartment. Is this normal or is it indicative of a problem?

The only other thing moving when you start the car (besides the motor) is the starter motor, which shouldn't make any sounds like you described. If you know anybody else with an E60, listen to theirs. If yours sounds worse then its probably going bad.

Good tip, I think I've read about other user's starter motors going bad. Has anyone had that happen? What are your symptoms?

The sound I described above only seems to happen if the car is sitting overnight. Maybe I can record the sound and post it for reference.
