I've heard that the octance rating in the US is different. Europe is the RON value. US uses something between RON and some other number. Sorry can't remember more of the story than that. However it means that the BMW BHP rating is 98 in Europe, and I think 93 or 95 in the US.

There are three Octane rating systems, RON, MON, and AKI which is (RON+MON)/2 with MON < AKI < RON.
Here in the US we use AKI and in Europe mostly RON. Any country use MON ?

For example, BMW recommends for it's K1100 motorcycle: a minimum of 89 AKI, 95 RON,

I've just found this old thread....
so is it really true that the engine somehow adjust itself based on the fuel 95 vs 98octane????
or is it just a common sense that the higher octane fuel will drive better because of more "efficient" burn/explosion????
or is there really some sensor or something that adjusts some engine values due to the fuel grade???

Yes. However, if the car wasn't made to take advantage of the higher octane fuel then you're just wasting money. In our BMWs, if you put in lower octane fuel your EMS/ECU will retard the timing to compensate for the lower grade fuel.

we are talking the M54 engine here... which is obviously made to work the high octane fuel

Yes, as are almost all BMWs made in the last 20 years that I can think of (for the US anway).
