dear all
Could someone please tell me if the improvement to the new magnesium alloy block engine of the 530i 258bhp) are worth the extra circa ?3K price increase put on the (55 onwards number plates) compared to the (05 plates with the older 231bhp engine).
I realize two things
1-Increased horse power +27 bhp
2-Lighter engine.
What I want to know is the effect on everyday life drivingm fuel sonsumption and handling of the car.
Will I be getting a much better car by paying an additional ?3K for the new magnezium alloy block engine, which many dealers charge over a similarly specced car with the older 231bhp engine.

I have not driven the older engine in a while and I came from an E39 540i with the V8 so take what I say with a grain of salt.
The newer engine is nice and I like the lighter weight. My only issue with it is that it's a high reving engine and it lacks a little in the low end torque. In fact it reminds me of the engine in my 1999 M Roadster. It's lots of fun to drive and fits my own style well but some people may not want to rev the engine too high in a midsize sedan to get all that the engine has to offer. The engine may be better suited to a roadster. That said, I'm personally happy with it. I think both engines have a similar torque curve. If you don't like to 'drive' the car then I would consider the older engine. However, if you like to have fun with the car then really consider the newer option.

I have a 2004 530i so my car has the old 225hp engine... I have no complaints about this engine - it sounds great, gets up to speed quickly enough and more than satisfies my needs. That said, I wouldn't mind getting the 535i next year!
