Here in Europe, there are three step-by-step E60 models labeled as follows:

530, 2996 cc, L6, 200kW, 320Nm, 1615 kg
540, 4000 cc, V8, 225kW, 390Nm, 1735 kg
550, 4799 cc, V8, 270kW, 490Nm, 1735 kg

What is particularly interesting here is that 540 is 265 lbs heavier than the nearest 530 model. If you apply the rule that every 100lbs = 10hp loss, then the 540i is about as slow as 530i, but with 40% worse mileage!

Of course there's 60Nm+ torque and another 2 cylinders. But except the engine sound, I'm not seeing too many benefits now.

I've bought 540i 2008 and starting to think whether I've made a good decision. Maybe I could either choose 530 or 550 right away. Also, the car is very unresponsive in standard drive/automatic mode since the transmission is mostly in 5th or 6th gear to keep the revs low and save fuel. So maybe that's even worse than the turbo lag on L6

I've never driven a L6 petrol so I'm not sure if my V8 was worth it. What do you think? Does L6 feel crippled compared to V8?

haha, sorry but i beat you to this

practically speaking, you definitely get more for your money on a 2006-2007 530i here in the US. overseas they have diesel plus many different models to choose from, but the same rule should still apply. i have driven a 2010 535i moments after driving my current 2007 530i on the same track, and the two seemed virtually no different at all to me in terms of acceleration.

btw, more torque does not denote more "power" at all, just more power at a given rpm. torque and horsepower are actually inversely related.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynometer

HP = (Torque * RPM) / 5252

so...

Torque = (HP * 5252) / RPM
