Hi all
One of my mates bought an 06 535d auto m-sport on the weekend, Silver Grey with black leather, a nice combo. What a great-looking car. Anyhow I had a drive in it yesterday, here are some observations compared to my car.
1: The 535d is undoubtedly faster than my car, figures do not lie. On my test route it was definitely quicker, by some margin. However in practical application, it didn't feel any faster, and the urgency my car exhibits didn't appear to be present. I put this down to my car having one big (higher pressure?) turbo, and the 535d having two smaller, lighter-pressure turbos. I would be interested in your thoughts on this.
High speed was attained with less fuss, less drama, which is likely why the car didn't feel faster than my 530d. My car has done 10k, the 535d 9k, so both should be run in. Having experienced the extra speed available from a 535d, I am tempted to remap my car.
2: I don't like Active Steering; maybe it grows on you, but I felt it was a bit light. The truck-like steering on mine feels more connected to the road.
3: I'm glad I have black wood as opposed to the alu cube. In fairness it looks good in a black interior, but with my light interior this would look awful.
3: HUD. I want this. Now. Best invention, ever. I will ebay a kidney.
Would I pay the premium over my 530d to get this car? Yes. Am I going to? Maybe, I think I will talk nicely to my dealer (and my bank manager) the next time my car is in for a service...
I have given my friend the URL of this forum, expect to see him sometime soon.
cheers

My Ride: 535d M-Sport, Carbon Black, Almost all options

Hi! before i bought my 535d, i took one for a short test drive from the dealer, and i thought to myself - it aint as great as they say it is. But the reason is that when u go for a short drive u dont experience much of the middle range torque cause u are trying to drive the car fast through the gears. And the 535d moves - like u said - very quickly and easily thorugh the gears with no fuss. So u are doing 120km\h in no time inside the city without drama.
The 530d (i had one) has 1 big turbo and so has 1 kick at 2000 rpm and makes more fuss when accelerating - but thats also nice. thats what u experience and 'feel'like its almost as fast. The 535d has 2 kicks - 1 at 1500 and the other just past 2500.
u can chip your 530 and it will be a fast car. Or u can get a 535d and remap it and it will be a BEAST !!
Good luck.

Nice write-up. If you have a Ferrari Modena wud you want an Enzo? Hell yeah why not.
This comparo is a tiny bit like that, I never felt my 530d slow but the remap brought me a new car, will not compare mine w an oem 535d but the fact that turbo is on from 2000rpm and w 608Nm that is at least I call impressive. Of course now w 265hp it is a small beast, I know that as Alex was pushing my a$$ in Germany, but even like that if u got a 535d remapped I wud be really afraid. I do not yet can tell the tops as need big brakes -they will come sometimes - and then it is a different strory. But to end it here I am not regreting not getting for 12.000 extra money+VAT a second turbo 535d, although now I may get one, but I am happy w my 608Nm and a "bit" juiced up

A question for those with the remapped 530d. Do you still have the clean exhaust pipes on the inside? I hate it when I follow a VAG PD diesel or a TDCi Mondeo or Focus that are spewing black fumes because they've been chipped and are overfuelled like crazy. If my 530d is to start smoking like the Queen Mary on full ahead I'm not doing it.
For the record, especially for those who have little experience with diesel - this is how the insides of my exhaust pipes look now. After 30k km I can still see the metal which I find amazing:

All petrol cars I've owned with fuel injection have black insides on the exhausts.

My Ride: 535D Sport Auto
Had 530d 218hp and currently have 535d. The 530d did feel fast (er) with its initial surge of torque, however, the 535d has the same grunt all across the rev range and therefore doesn't feel "here we go then nothing after". Compare the 0-100mph for the auto 530 and 535 19.4secs compared to 15 secs. Don't get me wrong the 530d is worth every penny but so is the 535d. Especially remapped with 334hp 0-100mph in 13.4.
