if money is no issue go for the 530..
i dont think any remap will give you the exact power a 530 has.. and it has alot more power than the 525, acceleration diffrence is big and at high speeds its a very big difference..
if your worried about fuel consumption...the differce between the two is very small...and the 530 is excelent in that.. and it all comes down to how your drive in the end, if you drive wisely, you'll get good range,,,

I have also found that the 525d is more quieter and smoother than the old 530d.

Same here too. ?3k extra and more rattly for the 530d but no denying the exta grunt. Main draw back with 525d is the slight turbo lag when taking off from rest which can give an un-nerving half second pause when pull out in front of traffic. The newly revised 525d should be good when released (detuned 530d).

The same consumption and emmisions yet more power. However I have to say the 525D seems more happy to rev and quieter than the old 530D.

After the initial enthusiasm, you will always want more power.
I test drove the 525d and pre-Sept 05 530d and there did not seem to be a big difference in power. The biggest difference in power delivery seemed to be manual/auto transmission. Comming from a petrol engine previously, the delay in initial takeup/accel from an auto box, even with the 530d, especially at a roundabout was too long for me to cope with. A 525d manual seemed to have more power and be much more responsive than a 530d auto from a standing start, and had much greater financial benefits (due to UK Company Car Tax at Sept 05).

Now that the Tax banding has changed and the power output from a 530d has increased significantly, I think I would choose differently.

Am I happy with the 525d? ............yes.

In fact it is the only company car I have considered buying after the lease is up, especially knowing that it can be chipped to give over 200bhp at minimal cost

231PS 530d without question! The 525d is the 'old' design block and should be avoided right now as it's about to be upgraded. (To a 3 litre light-block)

245km/h sounds like wishful thinking to me but top speed is not really that important - is it?

agree - don't bother with the current 525d.

As for the top speed, I had the needle at 250km/h downhill on the A3 autobahn again today and the 520d has an official top speed of 225km/h on the flat. In other words, "245km/h in a 525d" should not be compared with the 530d's genuine 250km/h top speed.

What's more important is how it reaches that top speed and I think you'll find there is a big difference between the current 525d and 530d. I drove the 530d and it felt significantly quicker than mine, especially over 100km/h. As a passenger in a 525d it didn't feel that much quicker than the 520d at all.

Go for the 530d - you know it makes sense

Could you please explain what you mean by "now the tax banding has changed"? I am wondering if I have missed something...

As of 1st Jan 06, the additional allowance for Euro 4 compliance was removed. I think it was 3%. So the big tax difference between diesel and petrol was reduced. Benefit in Kind (BIK) tax for 525d in 2005 was 22% (manual) 28%(auto), in 2006 25%(31%). The BIK tax for a 525i is 29%(32%). So for an auto trannny, the difference in BIK tax betwwen a 525d and 525i is now only 1%whereas before it was 4%, the difference between manuals is now 4% wereas before it was 7%. Also consider a 525i is ?500 cheaper to buy than a 525d

Thanks Fenix.

Question to the wider forum: when is the 525d with the new block (de-tuned 3.0) coming out? I wonder what CO2 will be... significantly affects UK Company car tax.
