Hi,

My 04 530d 60k miles needs a new turbo. The dealer says the actuator has stopped working (although they never actually checked it)

BMW want £1700 for a re-manufactured turbo inclduing fitting.

Garrett say the turbo is a VNT and therefore shouldnt be remanufactured.

I can get a new turbo direct for £800 +VAT if i can fit it myself.

Does anyone have a how-to for remving the turbo? it seems a pain as its burried in the engine bay and to remove the airbox it looks like i need to remove the strut brace!

Thanks!

I'd get a second opinion mate as how could your dealership tell sonething was faulty if they had'nt even checked it,i'm sure there's a good chance it may not be the turbo, any white smoke or loss of power before this problem?I'd get an independent to look at it before condemning it.

Theres was loss of power once engine is warm....basically the turbo wasnt kicking in....now its always like that...it gradually started to happen quicker....dealer says this is because when the turbo heats up the actuator is sticking an leaving the wastegate open so theres no pressure in the system.

They basically took the car in, charged me £80, said no codes found but this will be your problem and admitted that their hands had been no where near the turbo as this would take "hours".

If i can get a turbo removal how to at least i can get to the turbo and check everything else like hoses and take the turbo to someone to check.

Only had the car 6 months.

id say youd have to be very unlucky to be needing a new turbo on a genuine 60k engine, id go with a 2nd opinion as turbo removal is a lot of work.
The actuator mounting bkts have been known to break maybe causing the prob, you can do a little inspection around the turbo using a mirror in case its anything easy to see, before you start dismantling.
Worth having a good look at the manifold for any signs of cracking if you do get anywhere near the turbo.

Is this the part which is faulty? If so you might save some cash if it's not the turbo.

Hi Shaun,

I am suffering the EXACT same problem with actuator error codes 3f57 and 3f77 on my 04 525d, what happened in the end for you?
