Hi all,
How do I tell if I have the uprated swirl flaps? It would seem that only a very small minority have had problems with these and they do reduce the amount of soot clogging up the DPF.
I think maybe it's better to check them and if they're o'k just maybe carry out a little preventative maintanence and not worry about it?
What do you think?
Thanks

Do you have the DPF? If you do, then you have updated swirl flaps also.
Personally I wouldn't trust the maintenance would make any difference. I've read about a case where completely clean swirl flaps were broken.

Few ways to check the DPF:
- if it's visible in the service menu in the idrive --> you have it
- if your exhaust tips are straight --> you have it (unless the previous owner(s) have modded them), if they are bent down --> you don't have it
- if you can locate the DPF under the car --> well, you have it

Essentially the odds of having a failure are low, and with the improved flaps even lower. But there is a chance and the failure mode is catastrophic requiring a full engine rebuild and probably a replacement turbo.
There's a good explanation of exactly when the swirl flaps are "swirling" deep in here (make sure you have the latest version of Java running):
