Hi,
I've had my 2nd hand 2005 530d for two weeks now. The car seems reluctant to start. At best, it turns, then catches after a couple of revolutions. It always shakes as if it wasn't firing on all cylinders. At worst it takes a few attempts to start.

Is this normal ??

Once it has started it goes ok and is smooth. This is my first 6 cylinder diesel, I had an Audi A4 1.9TDI before, that started a lot smoother.

Cheers

Mines doing the same thing. Recently got it and I thought it had a weak battery that was causing it. Had the battery checked out and thats ok. Gonna try a few garages to see if they can figure it out. Will let you know.

Mine was like that too when I first bought it (2004 car bought second hand).
It was the starter motor. As soon as I mentioned it to the service guy he knew straight away what it was. Very common apparantely.

Nothing. Bought the car from a BMW garage with a one year Approved Used Warranty and it needed doing almost straight away. Replaced it no questions as soon as I mentioned it was turning over slowly. Now starts as it should.

Thanks for your replies.

That doesn't sound too bad - shame the supplying garage didn't pick up on it and changed it before delivering to me since it doesn't cost them anything ....

Something else has happened on the car now, the idrive said "Drive control system problem ... Drive moderately" last night

more things for the local dealer to sort out

I had a very similar problem about a month ago with my 04 530d, at first I thought it may have been the plugs. The battery eventually went so I took it to a main dealer where it had to have a new starter motor. I'd also ruined the battery so I'd get your motor checked out soon so as not to incur another cost.

I've got the car booked at my local dealer, it'll be in their workshops in two weeks time, so we'll see if the problems get sorted. Will report back later.
