Default 530d misfire and white smoke on start-up

Hi everyone, I’m new to the forum.

On Saturday I purchased a 2004 530d SE in a somewhat impulsive purchase.

A friend of a friend is getting a new BMW and they offered her a rather pathetic price for the car, when i heard this i said i would give her the cash instead and she was happy to do the deal.

It’s covered 91,000 miles ND has a full service history totalling 12 stamps in the book. The first 5 at BMW the remaining 7 at a local garage nearby. 8 of these services have included an oil change, every year (approx. 8k miles) since BMW stopped servicing it.

When warm to car drives like a dream and pulls like a train.

However, the past two mornings when i have started it from cold it has not been so good. It has no problem starting but when it does it does not idle smoothly, the car vibrates and it’s fairly noisy. When it first starts white smoke comes from the exhaust.

On Sunday morning it smoked for the best part of a minute, today i would say around 30 seconds. The rough idle calms down after the car has been running for perhaps 10 to 20 seconds.

When first pulling away from start-up it will leave a slight white cloud behind, but at the junction 100m down the road where i pull out it has cleared.

I will be taking it to work tomorrow for the first time which is 40 miles on the motorway each way so i am hoping this should give it a good blow out, perhaps this will help?

Can anyone give me any pointers in where i should start to resolve this issue? I am fairly competent at servicing and maintenance but this is my first diesel so i am out of my comfort zone here. I thought perhaps the glow plugs may not be working correctly? It had the injectors removed and tested 2 years ago and two of them were serviced. Wondered if these were at fault again but surely smoking would be seen all of the time and it would not dive smoothly?

Thanks
Matt
