Has any member driven both and can settle the debate once and for all?

Feb 2004 to Oct 2004(stolen) I had a 530d (manual gear, Active steering): I drove it with great satisfaction, torque was huge.
Since Dec2004 I drive a 535d (steptronic, Active steering, Dynamic drive): I am driving with much more satisfaction, torque is very impressive.
IMHO no doubt: 535d

Hi Gavin
is there any difference in economy ?
is your car manual ?
I'm in Windsor and am very interested in the chip . Seems good value too compared to the German offerings.

I have timed my 530d in DS mode 0-60 in 6 secs, but my 530d has 275bhp + 460 lb ft torque at 2000rpm which really helps with 0-60 time.
Colejl if your in Essex take a trip to Sanspeed in Bexleyheath, Kent get yours Superchipped, best ?500 you will ever spend. If you would like to have a go in mine first pm me. The latest Superchip remap in undetecable by BMW AND allows system software to be loaded.
BMC Carbon Airbox going on Friday, will post results.
Cheers

1. What did you insurance company make of the change or is is undetectable to them to
2. How has you mpg changed ?
3. Is this a HW change or SW ?
4. how long does it need to be in for to get it done?
Thanks

1. MPG has gone down a bit, to about 28mpg but that is around town as I don't really do much motorway miles, however, if I did do a lot of motorway miles I would expect the mpg to increase due to the fact that the engine downs not need to "drop down" as much.
2. I'm insured with Liverpool Victoria (part of frizzel), they are very mod friendly, they are aware of the exhaust and chip and it has not effected my premium. These remaps are undetectable by BMW so the insurance company would never find out.
My 530d has had a starting problem since I had it, it has now been solved after the car being in the local dealer for 4 weeks, in that time the whole car was checked, plugged into BMW GB technical centre and BMW German Technical Centre, nobody found the remap.
By the way the starting problems was all down to a badly fitted Tracker, that was fitted by BMW when the car was new.
3. My cars an auto, I'm not sure if the manual box can cope with all the torque.
4. Sanspeed will need the car for about 4 hours.
5. The remap is a software upgrade that changes fueling and boost. Unlike the tuning boxes which just do fueling, and do the boxes, especially the one that are imported come with any warrenty backup.
Regarding warrenty, the Superchip remap comes with a warrenty that would cover a maximun of ?10,000, if the remap was found to be the cause of any problems. I have remapped my last 4 cars, all with Superchips and done by Sanspeed.
The remapping process on a new 5 series is very complex, so the fact that Superchipped have remapped more diesels than anyone else is a mayor plus point.
The performance increase, especially mid range is nothing short of fantastic. I had a little play the other night with a 645 coupe, I think I really suprised him, I don't think he managed to get close enough to see the D on the back of my car. If you chip your 530D make sure you leave the 530D badge on the back, because you will upset a lot of people.
Hope this helps with you desision.

As far as I can say, there has not been any down sides about remapping. MPG increased about 2 and now it accelerate so htat I don't have to press pedal down very often.
Manual is very much sharper, I could not personally, think that I could get used to auto box. But it's just me.

How have you got to 311bhp, is it just a remap or is it a combination of mods. Also was this figure produced on a rolling road, and is the figure at the wheels or flywheel.
Have you replaced the airbox on yours, I'm trying a BMC Carbon Airbox today, we will rr test it and see what figures we get.

Gavin,
Many thanks for the comprehensive reply - I am seriously going to consider this.
I live on the west of London so I will investigate local dealers - although I a firm believer in recommdation so Graham might be getting a call
