I've just bought a 530d M Sport auto pre-registered (built 09/2008). It's only got 100 miles on the clock but I've noticed a resonating engine noise which occurs at about 1700 rpm. I had a 2.0d model and this made no such noise so I'm not sure if this is specific to the 6 cylinder model. The engine is virtually silent in the car at start-up to 1700 rpm and then the low reverb sound can be heard which drops off after about 1800-1900 rpm.

Is it just me? Thinking of taking another one out for a test drive from the local dealer to see if its the same.

Appreciate any comments.

No such noise on my 530d M Sport which had 8 miles on the clock.I bet your dealer will want you to put some miles on before they get serious on looking into it.

Not sure about the 530d but what you describe is a design flaw in the 525d that many people have reported on the forums. Something to do with resonance and the air intake. I have a 525d and personallyI can't hear a thing. I'll try to dig out some posts if you can't find anything.

530d M Sport 2006 model.

Can you be more specific about the noise? Is it through the cabin, or an outside noise that you hear when the window is down?

Firstly, I have no such noise.

Secondly, some months back I remember reading a similar thread ... problem was found to be a missing grommet down in the foot well somewhere. The guy said he would not have believed it if he hadn't seen it himself.

I dont know how the dpf burn off process works during the running in of such a low mileage engine, but that is the usual rpm for increased engine noise which is experienced during a burn off.
At any other time i dont get any resonating noise in mine.

That was me about the grommet being loose but that is a different problem. If the grommet is missing then you will hear constant loud engine noise regardless of the rev range.

I believe what you are describing seems to match this problem:
* https://5series.net/forums/index.php?showto...p;hl=rpm++noise
* https://5series.net/forums/index.php?showto...p;hl=rpm++noise
* https://5series.net/forums/index.php?showto...733&hl=525d

Interestingly, up until now I thought it was a problem isolated to the 525d. Having said that, I own a 525d and can't hear a thing. My hearing isn't exactly great for these kind of noises but I did notice a louder noise when the cabin grommet was missing so may be a bit of a hit and miss with all the diesel I6 engines. Anyway, good luck with your diagnosis.

Yeah Techno ... I remember you now. You were really keen on a bundle of options with a 525d thrown in, right?

Hope the car goes well for you man!

That's right I even managed to wing the following extras for free:
1. MTech OEM painted spoiler.
2. Sports Auto Transmission gear shifter, console cover, ECU and sports switch.
3. General iDrive software update.
4. Software update following retro fit of SAT.

I do believe you can get blood from a stone if you squeeze hard enough
