If your pro flap removal then definately worth doing while the bits are removed, Anzafins method is a very economical/ effective and neat approach with material costs of a few self tappers, or replacement plugs can be purchased to replace the assemblies. I opted for the self tapper approach.
What ever You might think of the flaps you cannot argue that once they are removed it does relieve a 'what if' concern at the back of your mind !
Thanks for your reply Rob. I don't know if I am pro flap removal or not. I spoke to the garage about it before they replaced the manifold. In fact they had a poster on the wall advertising some blanking plates for this issue. I asked whether it would save me any money having it done whilst they were doing the outlet manifold, but he said it wouldn't. Fair enough. So I left it and still have that 'what if' concern.... :-(

btw - GBP550 was the final price, but that included changing the microfilter for GBP39! A1 Specialist in Stevenage. It's now running much better. More power, better economy, less poisonous gas in cabin

Thats great news, you have it all sorted. Happy motoring again

It took me a long time to decide on removing the flaps, but there is no noticable negatives to them being removed to date.

Did they have a look at the condition of the flaps while the manifold was off ?

must be common, my previous car 530d, same problem. my regular garage tried welding it but it didn't happen, the stuff the manifold's made from is very thin so prob best to replace the manifold, not cheap at £300+ inc gaskets but better that stripping and rebuiling only to have to do it all again when the welding didn't work which is what happened to me. luckily the guys didn't charge me for the strip and rebuild the second time though. right pain in the arse all the same.

hopefully will last as many miles as a new one !

Hello mate ive got the same dreaded fault on my manifold, just about to take off camcover soon as i release the last 2 injectors 4&5.

Can you tell me bud what tungsten set up you used to tig weld was it 1.6mm? with 1.6 filler rod, and what grade filler did you use was it 308L?
Any info will be very much appreciated. Ive just bought myself a tig inverter welder, and have bought an argon bottle ready to go, just need the relevant ifo to cutdown my experimenting. thx again
