I have noticed the exact same problem with mine... God damn annoying, It's more, like you say, a buzzing. I found that pressing the check buttons seems to help for a while.

I think this could/should be classed as a warranty issue
It might be a warranty issue. I will let you know, I am due for an oil change in about 1000 miles so when I take the car in I will ask about it. In the mean time, I will see if the felt works.

I drive a 2007 530d with 47,000 kms covered. In the past few months a very irritating intermittent rattle or knocking noise has started. It comes from the passenger side of the dash and it seems to be located in the upper dash area close to where the pillar joins the dash. It wierd because it does not happen all the time and there seems to be no obvious triggers. It can start on a smooth motorway at 120km/h or on a bumpy back road at 50 km/h. Equally it might not start in either of these circumstances. Like other posters I like the sound of the engine but when this starts it consumes me. I've taken the car to the dealer but couldn't get it to start on the long test drive with the technician. BMW kept it for 48 hours and they say that they couldn't get it to happen when they drove it many times over the 2 days. Then 20 minutes after I leave the dealer the bloody thing started again. I am on the verge of ripping the dash apart just to find it. I've checked all the obvious things (air vent, wiper, plastic strip underwiper, cup holders, glove compartment etc etc). Has anybody had a similar experience? Please help.

Did you ever find out what this was?

I have the same issue on my 2007 530i. It only happens when it is cold outside and it appears that there is a vibration in the turn signal and that the rattle (or buzzing) is actually coming from the CHECK and BC buttons on the turn signal stalk. They are loosly fit. I am thinking of trying to slip some flet under then to quite it down.
I had the same problem. The dealer had the door panel off a while back and I thought they broke something loose, until one day I narrowed it down to the buttons on the side of the turn signal stalk. I tried pushing some silicone grease in behind the buttons. This seems to have fixed the problem. It wasn't a very loud noise but it was really annoying when the radio was turned off.

I have the same problem with my 530D, 2004.

It is like a metallic sound under the dash. It is not there all the time, but comes and goes. I sounds like someting is loose, and it sounds like it is a big part.

I have checked the bolts that was suggested earlier, but they were in place.

Anyone have an idea?

Had the same issue the first time this week. It's gone now but I'd love to know where to look if it comes back. I'm going to check the bolts mentioned earlier in the postings.

Fixed with solution from Rictor. Easy fix. My CPO had this problem when I bought it. I just got some black foam weather stripping from Home Depot and cut it into 1/4" cubes. I used tweezers to compress them and put two into the hollow in the back of each button. Buttons still work and there is anough pressure to prevent the rattling.

Problem solved BC and Check buttons. Great site and resource!

my car makes a similar noise when i don't have the radio on. on pure luck i figured out it was they key. there is a little bit of whiggle room and it seems to make a slight rattling sound at times. next time u hear it place your hand on the key and see if it stops.

i'm been too afraid of bringing this to the dealer and surely i would be labeled a complete pain in the ass...

My 07 just developed this buzz sound and I also narrowed it down to the turn signal stalk. Happy to hear I'm not alone. Thanks for the fix ideas!
