Hi all,

I'm in the process of Stripping down my 530d 2004 engine to gain access to the exhaust manifold. What a F*(&^%!!
I can't believe you have to take all that off to do the job! I'm an ex mechanic so it shouldn't be too difficult
There are fumes making there way into the cab and the engine will only get up to 80 degrees max. I'm pretty sure this is causing the poor fuel consumption.

I'm picking up a new manifold and gaskets tomorrow from BMW and it's gonna cost me £346, that's with a 10% discount(apparently). I considered welding it but I reckon it would probably just carry on cracking, and I don't want to have to strip it all down again to carry out another repair. I purchased the thermostat from Eurocarparts for £23.

Just thought I'd ask you knowledgable bunch for any helpfull tips to steer me in the right direction.

All help appreciated

Be thankful that you are working on an inline motor instead of a V motor

Never worked on a V before. I used to be a volvo truck mechanic, things were much easier to get at

My mechanic replaced it from the bottom. He stated that doing it from the top it not a good idea. You should leave the engine as intact as possible.

I'm going to check the swirl flaps aswell. To change the exhaust manifold you need to remove the inlet manifold. Not sure if I'm gonna get rid of them pesky flaps yet
