Hi guys, as my 545i starts to show its age, and gas prices starts to hit the roof here in Toronto, I need to change cars and thinking which would be better. I now have to drive long distances every day and as a result need a 6 cyl vehicle.
Should I get a 3 series like a 328 or 335, or a 528/535? Also will only buy 6 speed going forward.
How economical is a 6 compared to a V8?
Thanks!

Wow nice mileage! I do a lot of highway driving and I get average 21 mpg so there will obviously be a huge difference in gas consumption. I would go with the 5 too but the 3s are more sporty feeling. Just be careful with a 335i or 535i with the N54 engine. Lots of issues when you get higher mileage. If you can get the N55 engine in the 2010 and newer 335s

drastic difference in fuel economy between the V8 and I6
which chassis 5ers and 3ers are you looking at? fuel economy on the F30s is pretty amazing.

HA! Yes, there can be a big difference between the same cars and I have not figured out why. My 535 I get on average 25 and 28-30 on the highway depending on my driving... it could do much better if I woudl stay around 65. Our F10 535 diesel is pulling 41 on the hwy and 33 around town with my wife driving and she have a heavy foot.

On the trip I took the speed limit varied from 70mph to 75mph so I just set my cruise control and yes I was impressed with the mpg I got. I have yet to present my TX Police ID for consideration from another officer and I hope I never have to play that card.
