Excerpt from a recent Roundel letter:

"The performance factor is not in raw horsepower but in the fine balance between suspension, engine, and overall handling that would allow a BMW to effortlessly carve through switchbacks and tracks alike, competing against cars claimed to be far superior in specific aspects but none that combined them all."

This my friend, is why I keep saying that power is so overrated in our wonderful car. With the proper driving training you can get as thrilled in a 525 as you can in a 550. It's all about your preference for day to day use. For most of us an extra $5-10K is not an issue to "move up" to the next engine. It's just a matter of preference. So let's be proud of our 525's and let's kick some non-BMW ass.
+1

Some drivers training and the overall package of performance says more than raw numbers on a dyno.

i've had e39 525i before and it was a good car. Even though i debaged it (looked better), i like it as it is. Reliable, nice handling etc. sure v8 is faster but in most cases you don't really need all that power so in line v6 is perfect for daily driving.

Even if you did debage because of how you think other people preceieve the car, 98% of people wouldn't know the difference. I myself am a big car person. I happen to like how the lexus IS looks, I don't think any less of one I see on the road if it says 250 or 350, honestly I don't even know the power difference. A friend of mine has a sick IS250 bagged VIP style. He told me the car only apparently has 200HP. I couldn't believe it, I don't think any less of the car, I always like seeing them on the road. So its pretty much all mental and how you think people with precieve it is most likley different from reality. Though I would like more power than my 525 in traffic to get past cars, I DONT race. The car looks the exact same anyway.
I can't believe how today we refer to 200 HP as "only 200HP." I remember my stock '86 911 had 210 HP before I turned it into a gazzilion HP, but back then 210 HP was considered the balls....

I am really sick of these boards making owners of 525/530/528 feel like their car is so inferior.
Not so fast - you'll struggle to find many posts on this forum that support your argument. I very, very rarely see posts that do anything of the sort.

Be proud of what you can afford and what you drive.
Apparently you do not even believe that yourself.

Good catch.

I saw the inconsistency myself but figured that that posting about it would give ynottony the negative attention that he seems to like so much and that he is so skilled at egging so many members on into giving to him. Some folks really get pleasure out of driving other people bannanas.

Wow...the stupidy and ignorance that flows forth from the fingertips of some of the members of this forum is....to quote the great Casey Kasem:
Boy, is this fucking ponderous man...ponderous, fucking ponderous.

With regards to my first quoted comment:
Be proud of what you can afford and what you drive.
I was being sarcastic. Do you know what the word "SARCASM" means?
sar?casm
Pronunciation:
\ˈs?r-ˌka-zəm\
Function:
noun

1: a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain

Anyone with a half of a brain would have immediately seen the sarcasm in that post,
when taken into context with the title/topic/previous comments of this thread.

Yet you in your infinite wisdom and knee jerk reactions was quick enough to put
foot in mouth prior to putting brain in gear.

Do yourself a favor and THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK. What makes this travesty
even worse is that you are posting this in an internet forum. This means that
you have all the time in the world to properly think about your responses before
you post them. Yet you do not.

I would be inclined to believe (just an educated assumption here based upon
several of your posts I have read btw) that you do not hold a position of much
power/responsibility in your normal 9-5 day job. With such ignorant knee-jerk
reactions such as this, I cannot fathom anyone wanting to give you a job where
you are relied upon to critically think in order to get the job done.

Do the words "Carpal Tunnel" have any relevance to your particular line of work?

So far we have:

Krozi
sdg1871

as two individuals on this forum who in their actions/thoughts
have essentially identified themselves as ignorant morons.

Anyone else want to try to take me to task?
Let's get this out in the open right now.

As another great man once said (whom I once had the pleasure
of smoking a blunt 10 years ago down in Long Beach with):

People have long mentioned "de-badging" or "replacement badging" when it comes to driving a 525. I've heard that many seem embarrassed, with the halogen lights, the smaller engine and the bottom of the E60 pack mentality. I'm not, but I was just reading this review on automotive.com that was exactly how I felt, and one of the reasons I chose a 525i over it's 530i equivalent...
What are other 525i/xi owners thoughts?

"When it comes to handling, we like the six-cylinder models, and particularly the 525i. Despite its horsepower deficit compared to the other models, it's no lightweight, and because it's lighter, it feels spry and light on its feet. This is a good, honest sedan in the BMW tradition, with a comfortable ride, precise steering and nice, sharp handling, and without a lot of high-tech stuff to muddle the picture." -Automotive.com

I am super proud of my 525i and its wild 218bhp... i do not feel i need more in terms of power, and the agility is crisp. if someone thinks a 52x is inferior, take them to the hyundai dealership.

p.s.

And for the record....I wouldn't buy a 525i if you
paid me. To me (and quite possibly to a few other
people in life) the 525i symbolizes the guy who
wants a 5 series, but can't afford to step up
to the next level.

And before anyone tries to call me out on my 535i,
I was originally going to get a 550i, but after careful
research I realized that the 535i had more options to
make power than the 550i (aftermarket FI alternatives
excluded).

Same reason why I laugh at guys rolling around town
in "C" class Mercedes trying to look all hard and shit.

Like it or not, these German cars convey some sort
of status, one way or another. It's just my opinion,
but why chance getting caught at a stoplight confrontation
in your entry level 3/5 series?

Assuming of course, a powerful car means something to you.

Ex gf's parents are multi-millionaires and her mom
drives a 525i. Dad drives it too, he has no problem
with the car and lack of power because he doesn't race
it, nor does he drive like 99.9% of all BMW drivers out there:

Like an asshole

Krozi is 16 years old. So no I doubt very much he holds a powerful position in a 9-5 job.
Unless of course its an after school job.

Give the kid a break!
