My Ride: 525i M-sport, carbon black, beige leather.
Default

After 8 weeks of waiting I was over the moon when I finally picked up my 525i M-sport in carbon black with beige leather 5 weeks ago. I have been driving carefully trying not to go over 4.5 on the rev counter apart from one or two occasions where the car was just begging to be pushed that little bit more, In the first few days of the car the neighbours must have thought I was completely crazy whilst I stood on my driveway locking and unlocking the car by remote just so I could admire the LCI light clusters in all there glory.

Anyway two weeks ago (3 weeks after I had the car) I take my pride to the shops loving every inch of the journey. I come out of the shop and walk across the parking lot (miles from any other cars of course) as I sit back into the car I still feel the overwhelming sense of pride as I am caressed by my beautiful beige leather sport seats. A press of the start button and I get a surprise. the engine turned over for a few seconds before firing into life. "what the hell" I think to myself. "Oh well, stuff happens", I blip the throttle before selecting a gear. My baby coughs and wheezes and just doesn't show her usual eagerness to sing to me. After a few seconds, "Bling", I-drive is telling me something. "Engine fault, reduced power". We limp home with a sense of apprehension.

A call to BMW emergency services soon delivers a technician. Unfortunately my pride needs attention at the dealers so off we limp. The dealer had a great bedside manner and gave me a lift into my office. They gave me a call later in the day to say that she needs a new "high pressure fuel pump". The part has been ordered and should be there the next day, they will send a rental car around to my place of work.

Whilst I was gutted, I thought I had been dealt with impeccably and started telling people about the great service I got from BMW.

Then the rental company arrived, a Vauxhall Zaffira. WTF. I phoned my dealer and said that I wasn't particularly happy with my rental. They apologised and said it was unfortunately all they could source in the time frame, but don't worry it should only be for a night. With gnashing teeth I accept this situation and just look forward to getting my car back the next day.

Next day, I ring 4 times. I leave voicemail. No return call. I venture to the dealers, apparently the service department have had a "really hard day". "OK, so where's my car". "sorry sir, the part didn't arrive. You will have to keep the rental"

Repeat the above for the next 4 days. Countless calls to the service desk with no return calls, no apology, no explanation. After a large rant at the service manager the dealer at least manage to source me another 5er that I can use. It is a 525d SE pre-LCI. It's not a bad car, but it's not my car.

I am just off to my dealer now. Not to pick up my car, but to ask why the hell for the last week nobody has returned my calls and when the hell my car is coming home.

For the 5 weeks since my car was delivered the last 2 it has sat at the dealer. Surely when you pay a premium you expect better service than this don't you? Wish me luck, I wonder what today?s excuse will be.

Hey Edd how are you?

I'm Rick and own a LCi 535xi 2008 here in the states. I've had a similar problem and have had other problems to. I will not go into detail here again but I will look for my post and copy and paste it onto another reply for you to read. I believe that sooner or later there will be a recall on that part. Read my next post in regards to you situation.

may 18th post:

I bought the 535xi 2008 in the beginning of the month and already have a problem with the new electronic gear shift. The problem is when I was parked and attempted to put the car in drive the shifter would not allow me to put it in gear, similar to not pressing the brake and attempting to put it in gear. I had to second guess myself so I did it again and sure as %$@ the gear would not go back into drive. So I put it in reverse and then try to put it and drive then it worked. I did this several times and there is definately a problem with the shifter. I called BMW service and spoke to the manager and brought the car in this morning. The shop manager checked my car and noticed the problem. He told me he was going to put it on the computer and see if there was anything wrong with it. I waited and after a while he came back and told me that the computer did not find anything wrong with it and he would have to call BMW in Germany and have them send detailed information on the shifter and what may cause this problem. He said that the car is to new and they don't have any information readily available. He further stated that the shifter may need to be replaced and they will have to get it from Germany. Is this common with new cars or is it just mine? I mean somepart going bad so soon. Already a wheel allignment and now this.

I haven't even enjoyed my car.. So far I have 1300 miles on it. I drove it to Virginia from NY and Back. That's how I noticed it needed some allignment.

Thoughts, Comments anything I can get. Am I making a big deal out of nothing?

June 17th post:

2nd time Vehicle starts only after several attempts:-(
This is the second time this happens to me. I have a 2008 535XI no comfort access.

I was visiting my friend for fathers day and parked the car. About 3 hours later I decided to leave and went into my car and tried to start it. It turned over but it did not start. I tried it again several times. I then waited a couple of minutes and tried it again and it still would not start. I closed everything locked it and waited 5 minutes. I opened it again and after 2 or 3 attempts it started.

This happened to me last week while I was in Capemay. At one point I thought I had to call roadside for help. Has this happened to anyone else and it so what was the final outcome and the reason BMW gave for this to happen? I hate to call the service department again for another problem. I had a 2002 525I and that one did not give me so many problems.

Thanks Guys, Rick....

May have answer to stall start on 2008xi
OK boys this is what I was told by my service rep. He just called me and told me that he spoke to the shop manager and explained what my car is experiencing. The shop manager stated that he has heard this before on the 06+2007 models but not the 2008's or so called LCI. He stated that it's a PRESSURE PUMP and that it's on national back order. It will not be available for 3 weeks. He further stated to monitor the situation and if it occurs again then I could bring it in to verify that this is the case and of course they will accommodate me with a loaner.

That's what I call service but i'm still a little dissapointed because it's a brand new car. At least I have an answer. Incase anyone is wondering the car is not shaking and there is no lost of power. That rules out the injectors.

A recent post and answer to another members problem

Spike I feel your pain. I too was in somewhat of a bad situation when I bought my car. I also own a 535xi and have been to the dealer several times for several issues. I will not go into detail but i'll briefly describe the issues with my car. The first problem was a wheel alignment, the steering wheel was off center to the right just a little but noticible. Brought it in twice for that. Second the shifter, yes, the park, drive, shifter went bad. That was on national back order for 2 weeks. That was replaced and now it's the pressure pump for the fuel. Once in awhile the car won't start and requires several attempts to start it. The story is relly long but i'm giving you the short version. That part is also on national back order for 2 to 3 weeks. I know how you feel , hang in there.

Rick...

...............................

Hope this helps.. I currently on the donors list, what I call it, for the part. There are a couple of steps your car has to go through before they cam open whats called a PUMA case and BMW Germany approves the part to be shipped for replacement. Currently the part is on national back order for the entire nation.

Good luck and hang in there..

I feel you you, mines was like yours 2 weeks old and its now 6 weeks old with the last 4 being sat at the back of the dealer with any 4 E60s all with the same problem.

There is no part fix at its a design fault with all E60 pumps, so the wait time is not for a new part but for a new redesign of the pump its self.

Ive now rejected my car and stopped all monthly payment, i have a brand new one on order but the lead time is 6 week which my dealer felt would be quicker than waiting for the part, i also claimed around 500 GBP off BMW for out of pocket expense.

Good luck with yours, please post anything you find out from the dealer, it could help the others who have the same issue.

Thanks olli_535d and Ricracing for highlighting the other thread which shows people with the same problem.

I still don't have my car. It is 11:30 and I haven't had the 9:00 update call the my dealer promised me when I went in on Saturday.

I have sent an email to BMW UK asking for more information on the fault, and an update on parts availabilty in the UK.
