You may had a couple things causing your issue. Look at your engine temp to see if the coolant temp rises and cools. If it's staying let's say within 10 degrees then your thermo is stuck open causing no heat or low heat. Your fan is turned on based off the sensor at the radiator. Your thermo opens and closes based off the temp off the coolant in the engine. They work together to keep the engine cool

Strange over heating
Hello all , I’m new to this site & would like some advise please ! .
I have only Just bought an older e60 54 plate 525i petrol with 162k auto box ..
the car is mint & runs & drives very very well & is smooth & quiet … however …
it over heats if used for too longer periods during any one day .. my question is …. Is it a stuck shut thermostat… or poor weak water pump ? .the pump is driven from the belt ( not electric) .
the heater does blow warm air … the right radiator house is hot .. the left ( bottom hose ) seems a lot colder . The fan comes in & out & seems to be doing it’s job. Is it a new water pump ? Or thermostat. ?? Or both ? Or a blocked rad ? . When I remove hit expansion tank cap the flow into it seems very feeble & weak. It’s a great car … but this cooling thing is spoiling it .can anyone advise ?

The M54 water pump is cheap and easy to do yourself also the water pump. Your radiator can't be blocked or we would be having a different conversation. Just change the parts yourself and save a headache from trying to figure it out. If you're not a DIYer then just take it to an Indy and let them figure it out.
The water pump and thermo you should find together under $100 plus cost of fluid. Make sure you get a pump with the metal propeller and maybe replace the belt while you're at it.

525 over heat
Hi thanks for your help !! I do wonder if the stat is stuck shut … but when it’s idling the flow back into the expansion tank is very feeble , although the heater does blow warm air ?? It’s a tricky one & it’s spoiling the car .. I can drive it around , but the high temp warning has come up twice on the display . Im
gonna change the pump , drive belt & stat & hopefully go from there .
at the mo I dare not drive it any long distance as don’t want to damage the engine head etc by over heating .

Hi!
i had a following case with my 535d lci: changed both thermostats, big one and small one, and still very low engine temp. Then, a more experienced mech changed the third thermostat, located by the gearbox, and - voilà, i got the normal engine temperature. Not sure all models have 3thermostats but try getting Your car’s specifications from bmw.

Hi all, Got an issue on 2005 525i M sport.
First off, had radiator replaced after it was found leaking, before this, I know that the engine temperature was at the last two bars on the rev limit on dash. Here's where the problems start...
Picked up the car from shop, drove normally for 10mins and then noticed heating wasn't working/slowly dying as I was turning it up on the drive home. Thought it was just new coolant and radiator so all was just cold? Next morning, for 50km drive had no heating and engine temperature was really low (ie. lots of bars on the dash meter). That week I drove 500km and had no heat but same low engine temperature. Took it back to shop next week and got thermostat replaced.
Picked it up today and had heat for drive home (thermostat was faulty so replacement was necessary regardless) later on in the day, very little heat, and engine temperature is maxing at 70*C (on hidden menu coolant sensor temp reading)...
Sorry it's long, I like to be as detailed as possible, Any ideas on what's going on here? would a faulty temperature sensor cause the low engine temp and almost no heat inside the cabin? Water valve? Would like some info before I take it back and they just replace parts randomly

The car is not reaching 95 to 110 C and not staying between that temp, replace the thermostat. If car overheat meaning you temp is above 120 C and you replaced the thermostat and the radiator fan kick in wile driving, check the water pump that is working, do the automatic bleed to start the pump. If the water pump is working and still get 120 C and you replaced the thermostat , check that you don't have debris (leaves) between radiators. If the radiator fan kick in only when you stop the car, don't worry its normal because the engine is to hot and gets even hot when you stop.
