Hi there, I hve now had my 04 525d a week and am just wondering what miles per gallon everyone is getting? I have done 1000 miles and it is reading at 34.8. Is this good or should I expect more??? I am doing mainly motorway miles

I have a 520D and the best I can get out of it is about 48MPG on a long run. Previously I had an A4 1.9TDi which I could get over 60 easily. Strange as the figures suggest the 520D should only be about 2 MPG below the Audi.

Ah the famous 'how long is a piece of string' question.

It varies enormously, 25mpg around town to 37 on a run is the sort of range depending on your driving style.

My 530D Auto averages around 32mpg on mixed driving, from as low as 22 in town to 40mpg on a run.

Also check out the old chestnut.

If you are relying on on board instrumentation to give your mpg, make sure that the Units are set to Imperial Gallons.

The engine is also still so new that the milages are not closely to its best yet.

A BMW engine needs some 20,000 miles to be at it's best.

I'd support that, mine has 20K on it and has just been serviced and I'm getting better economy than I've managed up to now.

Why is an 04 525d's engine new?

You don't say if your car is auto or manual. Auto's tend to use more fuel. My auto 535d averages 27.7mpg (not reset the average cons from new). I think this is brilliant for the size and performance of the car and the way I drive with my very heavy right foot!
