My Ride: All on order and should be here by 28th September 2007
Default

Hi

I have placed an order with a leasing company for the car below. I ordered a diesel for the fuel economy and the tax implications.

When I spoke to the guy at the leasing company he asked why I haven?t gone for a petrol car (all my previous cars have been petrol ? think I am a bit of a petrol head deep down). I mentioned my reasons and he said that new 525i is nearly as frugal on fuel and cheaper in company car tax.

Now I am in a quandary. Do I change my mind and go for a 525i petrol or stick to the diesel, which will be my first diesel car. It will still be a manual either way as my budget does not stretch to an auto.

What are you thoughts?

Hmmm... I don't think there's a petrol around that gets the kind of gas mileage a diesel gets. Maybe if the petrol was a hybrid, but I still doubt a hybrid can even compete with a diesel.

I would go for the diesel and with automatic transmission.

The 525d is bit better for the environment and has a huge torgue
which is good to have in everyday driving.

Both engines are 3.0 litre!

525i - 218 hp@6100 rpm, 270 Nm@2400 rpm, CO2 176 g/km; 0-100 km/h 7,1 s and 7,4 l/100 km

525d - 197 hp@3750 rpm, 400 Nm@1300 rpm, CO2 165 g/km, 0-100 km/h 7,6 s and 6,2 l/100 km

You could always trade off the MSport option for the auto.

You're hardly gonna be throwing it round corners and you sit inside it.

I must admit I do prefer the look of the M sport package, but I am also used to sport seats and firm suspension. I occasionaly participate in some spirited driving at the moment and I am a little worries about going for a diesel as it may not be as good as I hoped.

I understand that the petrol will cost me more in fuel, but the it will also save me on the company car tax. The petrol would actually cost me around ?15 per month more to run.

It is a shame that when you test drive these vehicles you cannot really drive it as you would your own.

The 525i is "what car"pick of the range for the 5 series.

Tough choice as I am now a dieselhead. If you were talking pre-facelift I would definitely say the petrol.
Now with the LCI the 525d is a much more powerful beast, and you will notice the power without high revving the engine.

My choice: hard call, but the diesel edges it on real world power delivery.

Diesel wins on every count.
And matched with the LCI auto/engine improvements....
just amazing

I orginally picked the 525i reasoning like yourself,
but on paper and real drivablity the current diesel is streets ahead.

No regrets on the LCI 525d

On saying that the 525i is an amazing engine, its just that its diesel brothers are so good.

Hi,

I drive a LCI 525iA after a 04/530iA and first impression is that the new combo, autotranny & 3,0 petrol engine is fantastic. May be I am a petrolhead, but I really like the sound of BMW inline six. If they were able to offer the torque of diesel combined with the sound and feeling of a petrol six...

Both are surely excellent cars, but having had three modern diesels in the past I know that for me petrol is the right choice, silent, smooth and surprisingly good in fuel economics as well. But it is your choice, just remember that a turbo diesel is quite rough and noisy in city traffic, on highway you don?t even hear or feel the difference.

Best regards,

jukka

+1

The only disadvantage is probably the sound of the dieselengine. Not to sexy !
But you have to see it this way: dieselsound = torque

OK, a little out of date and things may have moved on...

Best 2.5 liter to 3.0 liter Engine

BMW?s 3.0 liter twin turbodiesel from the BMW 535d wins this category again. The engine comes with two turbos, a smaller one and a larger one that work sequentially, with the smaller one providing low-end boost without taking too long to spool up and a bigger turbo to take on the higher rev ranges.

1. BMW Diesel 3-litre Twin Turbo (535d) 155
2. BMW 3-litre 6-cylinder (Z4, 330, 530, 630, 730) 153
3. Honda 3-litre V6 Hybrid (Accord) 145
4. Audi/VW Diesel 3-litre V6 (A4, A6, A8, Q7, Touareg, Phaeton) 141
5. Jaguar Diesel 2.7-litre V6 Twin-Turbo (S-Type) 115
6. BMW 3-litre 6-cylinder (330, X3, X5) 87
http://paultan.org/archives/2006/05/15/200...awards-results/

Edit: slipped down the rankings in 2007...

One BMW engine has replaced another at the top of the 2.5-litre to 3-litre standings: this year, the German firm?s new 3-litre petrol straight-six with two variable turbochargers, direct-injection and an all-aluminium crankcase has dominated the category, beating its diesel sibling by 129 points.

1. BMW 3-litre Twin Turbo (335) 383
2. BMW Diesel 3-litre Twin Turbo (335d, 535d, X3) 254
3. BMW 3-litre (Z4, 330, 530, 630, 730) 98
4. Audi/VW Diesel 3-litre V6 (A4, A6, Allroad, A8, Q7, Touareg, Phaeton) 96
5. Porsche 2.7-litre flat six (Boxster, Cayman) 95
6. Honda Hybrid 3-litre V6 (Accord) 79
