I understand that the one of the differences between the 2993cc diesel engines is the turbo size.
This is certainly suggested by the power curves i.e. once spinning the larger turbo is showing its advantage.
With what I know of turbo charging the smaller turbo of the 525d makes itself known earlier by spinning up very quickly and hence maximum torque at 1300rpm.
Comparing to other engines out there however 400Nm is pretty conservative for a 3 litre diesel and the way the torque curve is clipped, suggests to me at least that there is plenty more to come. E.g. MB E220cdi 400Nm, E280cdi 440Nm, E320cdi, 540Nm
Certainly from the threads on remaps there is suggestion of another 100Nm which if you extrapolate the curve does seem possible. It would be a much narrower rev range though.
Any one else got any further technical knowledge that they can lend?
Any one know why BMW might limit the torque to 400Nm? Is it just to create some "space" between engine specs, or is something to do with car taxation in some countries?
Regards

I think it has to do with the 530d.
btw, I'm quite dissapionted with BMW using the same engine for a lot off 'different' engines. Too much Volvo for me...

From the torque curves you can also see that the 530d has a much wider torque aspect. ex. 400+Nm from 1300rpm to 4100.
