Apologies for repeating this subject but there have been a few posts on this over the past few months and I thought I should try and get to the bottom of it.

Here's the text of an email I sent to BMW customer service:

Hello,

I have an LCI 525d M Sport auto (197bhp, 2993cc) and have a question.

At around 1700rpm the engine is "gruffer" (noisier) than at 1500rpm or 2000rpm.

This doesn't seem right to me.

I have spoken to some other owners who report that their cars are the same.

Can you ask your technical people if this is a characteristic of the engine please.

I find it intrusive as it equates to an indicated 75mph and frankly I am disappointed by it.

The noise is really obvious and easy to detect. At idle in neutral, hold the revs at 1500rpm , quiet; hold at 1700 rpm, noisy; at 2000 rpm, quiet again. Try it on one and see what I mean.

I have asked my local dealer to comment but have heard nothing from him yet.

Is this a problem you are aware of? If so, what do you intend to do about this?

Regards,

I would be interested to know if anyone else has pursued this issue.

I would also be interested to know if all 525d LCIs do it. Also, could a 530d owner comment please.

I will post the answer BMW give, when I get it.

It may be that I am just too fussy...

Regards,

I have the noise too. Lucky for me I usually go faster and the noise disappear. I haven't bothered to discuss it with BMW but it's clearly a glitch in the car.

Thanks for the response. It is obviously not the most exciting of topics!

If I cruise at 70mph or 80mph, it is not an issue as you say.

I just don't think it should be there

Other than an acknowledgment that they have the email, nothing from BMW yet.

Come on 530d LCI owners, do you get it?

I should get my new 525d next weekend, or early the week after.

I shall listen out and let you know...

Will be taking car out on a long run tomorrow - will look out for this noise on mine - but I don't think mine does this. Is yours manual or auto? What is the age & mileage of yours?

It is an auto, built in July, registered in October, 2,400 miles.

Try slowly going from 1500 rpm to 2000 rpm and you pass through the "zone".

I took delivery of mine in June. It's manual and has now 18.000 km. The noise was there from the beginning. I think it's resonance.

I have a 530d Auto and have tried today on the M4 using cruise control and going 1 mph faster at a time from 50 through to xxx mph and cant say I noticed any 'resonance' or any other unusual noise or vibration.

I had a response from BMW which basically said there is no issue on our database and, take it to your dealer.

So, as my car was at the dealer today having the CD changer fixed, I asked them to listen to it.

(I didn't take the car, my fleet manager did)

The message predictably came back "they are all like that".

I will try and speak to the workshop manager direct, as we all know how inaccurate 2nd hand messages can be...

It has been suggested this is resonance and I have to say it seems a liklely explanation.

It least I am not the only one to experience this as some other forum members have.

I wonder if BMW really are aware of this??

I will report if I get anywhere.

Regards,
