For every day driving a 525i has plently of power. Now wanting more power is up to you. I have a 330i and a 530i and find the power more then enough due to too much city driving. Before our E60 530i we had a 2002 E39 525i, that felt ok also for every day driving with only 184 hrp so yes a 215 hrp 525i is fine.

525i lack power? Since when has 215bhp been lacking in power? That kind of figure was reserved for range topping exec's and sports cars 10 years ago, though admittedly you can get VW golf's and Ford Focus's with more power, it's all due to the stupid horsepower race which has been going on and on for decades...
If you want underpowered, drive my mum's 1.2 80bhp Fiat Brava.
Oh btw 525 lack of power compared to what? Yeah it lack's power compared to a 550i, but then that has a 5.0 litre V8!

Ok it's not an m5 or 550i, but then the owners of THESE cars tend to still want more. Remember - no matter what you get - someone will have something better. This doesn't reduce or devalue what you have in any way.
I bet there are a lot of people out there who would be delighted to own converted2bmw's mum's Fiat Brava. (although I admit I am not one of them

Totally agree with this - the 525 is a lovely car and no-one should be ashamed of it. It's better than 80% of the other cars you'll see on the road.

A 525i in the USA is probably considered as a small engined 'sedan', whereas in the UK it's a large engined 'executive saloon'. It's only in the last 5 years or so that we've been seeing larger engined cars, as they become more efficient, and cheaper to run....
If you consider a 525i as slow, then you are spoilt rotten, whether through 'your' countries ecomony, or luck!
As for the Brava, It's quite slow, but that Italian engine is smooth, and sounds nice!

Ok, but .. for it's displacement a BMW engine punches way above it's weight.
There are plenty of larger engined american cars which just aren't as quick and don't handle as well.
There just isn't the pressure to design cars that are quick light and frugal, when petrol is dirt cheap.

after reading all these posts i couldnt agree more... especially for the 2006 models or more.... the 525i/xi is a lovely car, as i would know since i own one myself... As for power, sure we could all use more power... as humans we will always want more... Furthermore, the 525i/xi is not much different than a 530i/xi... sure maybe 40hp more, but in 0-60 timings, the 530 is about a little less than half a second faster.... are you willing to pay 1 thousand dollars for each TEN horses you get... in my opinon, no. Those who buy a 530 have more of an ego... let me give you another example, a couple of months ago i over took this 2002 530i, 3.0L 225hp, as soon as i got in front of him, it was almost that he was pissed off that a 525 cut him off, so he tried to get past me by flying by in the right lane, i of course put the pedal to the metal(in DS mode) and he couldnt get infront of me.... Maybe a newer 5er would have been able to pass... but the 525 still keeps up... The only thing that differentiates my 525xi to those 530 owners are my HALOGEN headlamps, which i hate so much, but then again they can be retrofitted... All in all if you want a "fast" car, save your money and get a 550i, or even better, an M5.
