I find the cruise works perfectly smothly on my 04 530d.

In cruise or manual, the autobox kicks down far too often for such a torquey engine. Hence spend most time manually locked into M6 if cruising. (Show me a clear & twisty hill road and we're out of cruise in a flash and using the manual selector for different reasons!)

Indeed, locked in M6 works well as long as you stay above 50mph-ish.

No problem at all for me : cruise control works very softly, saving fuel (gearbox on D).
And it' s fine to use : small clic = +1 km/h, harder clic = +10 km/h. Perfect.

I have exactly the same on a 2003 530d with Steptronic. At 80km/h or 110km/h on Cruise Control there is a slight variation in RPM and you feel the car decelleration/accelerating ever so slightly. Doesn't happen always but often. A software change did not help. I am not bothered because I really have to pay attention to notice.

I've noticed that when I use the cruise control (approx. 100km/t) the car behaves somewhat nervous. What I mean by that is that you can feel the car giving more or less throttle, it kind of feels like a very soft gear shift.

I believe this annoying behaviour is connected to the high torque turbo diesel engine. Any thoughts?

Anyone else annoyed with a nervous cruise control?

Could this be improved by a software update? I have CIP 19.2?

My last 530d whilst on cruise control acted in a very weird way! When I added 5mph it wanted to accelerate as fast as possible with a jerky motion and needed to be in M6 to smooth things out. My 535d is totally different, you can increase speed smoothly and it doesn't change down. I test drove an X5 today with a 218hp engine and the cruise control was totally smooth in operation. I can only conclude my 530d's software was causing the problem as there's no way that it was meant to be as it was.

I took the car for a test drive today to do a more accurate test.

First let me emphasise the problem. Whilst driving with the cruise control activated a soft throttling de-throttling can be sensed. No big deal, but I think it should not have been there. It has nothing to do with the fact that the car accelerates when a new set point is given.

I've managed to isolate the problem. The problem occurs when I drive around 1500rpm at 110km/h, but only when in the 6th gear. You can then sense the problem, but you can also see it as a small "vibration" in the rev-needle, which indicates that a throttling de-throttling process is constantly ongoing. However, it is very soft but it is noticeable.

Make a test drive, and check if you got this behaviour as well!

Responses are appreciated

Hi!

I tested this evening cruise control setting speed to 110 km/h. I couldn't sense any oscilation in throttling either see any movement in rev needle. I have no idea of CIP version, but my car is build in March 2005.

Hi,

couple of days ago I noticed the same problem with cruise control on at 76mph. I did not check the rev-needle, but every 3-5 seconds it feels like de-throttling and then throttling again.
Software was recently updated to 20.01, I did not notice this behaviour before the update.
