I've noticed that when I use the cruise control (approx. 100km/t) the car behaves somewhat nervous. What I mean by that is that you can feel the car giving more or less throttle, it kind of feels like a very soft gear shift.

I believe this annoying behaviour is connected to the high torque turbo diesel engine. Any thoughts?

Anyone else annoyed with a nervous cruise control?

Could this be improved by a software update? I have CIP 19.2?

Hi Bobkare, I drive a 530d steptronic and when I go in Austria I put cruise at 100-110km/h, becasue last time they caught me

and I did it in other place at 160km6h e.g. and never felt the same like, you but the switch is very smooth and you cannot really see a diff in the rpms. But maybe somebody can confirm it to you. Ask your dealer at least if you are concerned.

I think I know what you mean. The cruise control is very poorly matched to the diesel engine because even when you re-engage it just a few kmh from the original chosen speed, the transmission drops a gear in order to get there quicker - causing a jerking effect. This behaviour is completely unnecessary with so much torque available.

As far as I am aware a s/w update will not make any difference, it is just poor logic coding for the diesel.

This is surprinsing as my car with a petrol engine and a lot less "torques" (thanks Jeremy) does not do anything like this.

Mine is solid as a rock at those speeds...

As mentioned elsewhere in this thread the 'box is keen to downshift when resuming speed but I believe this is a different issue?

I also have a 525d but with a manual gearbox. I noticed that even when you engage the cruise control to gain a few km/h (i.e. from 115 km/h to 120 km/h), the acceleration is quite fast.

My guess is that two factors count :
1. High torque and power of the engine
2. As you don't control the throttle yourself, you feel more like a passenger not anticipating the changes of acceleration.

I don't know about you guys but I always feel that my car is more powerful when the cruise control accelerates than myself. Obviously it isn't.

We have the same issue with the cruice control as you describe. If the speed is around 90 - 110 km/h, and I increase the speed with 10 km/h at the time, the gearbox downshifts and make a fast accelration. I use to lock the car in 5 th or 6 th gear so it will not downshift...

If the speed is around 140 - 180 km/h the cruise control works just great

I have manual this might not give You answer what You need. But since they updated program about month ago I have noticed that cruise is now much smoother! Earlier it accelerated with full pedal and if I engage it just after it dropped off whole car jumped! Now it's much more better.
