not sure how many diesel e60 owners on the forums but here goes.
i was wondering if my 520d has the dreaded swirl flaps.
its manufactured sep 05 and i assume it has a M47TU2D20 engine.
according to the info here: http://www.pmwltd.co.uk/swirl_flaps.pdf the engines affected are from 2001 to july 2005 and theres no mention of the 2.0L 520d or the M47TU2D20 engine.
anyone knows for definite if my 520d has them?

Hello.
There are quite a lot of diesel owners on the forum!
And yes, you have the swirl flaps in your M47N2 engine. Check this: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.d...01&hg=11&fg=40
If you want to get rid of them, then check this: https://5series.net/forums/topic/704...diesel-engine/
Please ask if you have anything on your mind!

i was reading on some forum that it probably has them but it does not have the ones that fail.
will get them removed anyhow i think to be safe. won't do it myself but is it just a matter of removing the manifold to the cylinder head and you can get to them?
someone was saying it is a very laborious job and it will take a few hours to complete.
also does it affect the car performance in any way?

Yeah you only have to remove the intake manifold, but at least in 6 cyl engine there's quite a lot of stuff to remove before getting to the intake manifold. But it's mostly plastic parts etc. Takes couple of hours if you know what you're doing and with the right tools.
It doesn't affect the performance at all. Read the thread behind the link I gave you. There you have your answers.

Well worth getting the swirl flaps removed just for the peace of mind. Had ours done about 4000kms ago and no problems to report. I ordered the blanks from PMW and my local independant garage removed the flaps and fitted the blanks. Charged about 160 euros including changing the air filter whilst the car was in bits.
Hope this helps

thanks for that guys. going to get them out very soon. the car has now 78k miles so i don't want to take any chances, especially after getting it remapped recently.
also any idea what size they would be without opening the car up? up to 2004 they are meant to come in two sizes but after that are they all one size? if so then which one.
maybe someone with a 520d from around 05 has done them on their car and has an idea

You could order two sets of blanking plates from PMW, one for the larger, updated flaps and one for the smaller, original ones. PMW will refund you right away when you send back the redundant set...
No hassle at all, I took this route as well.
