Had a 520d auto as a loan car and what a great car it is. I was amazed at the pulling power and smoothness of the engine. No wonder you see loads on the UK roads. BMW should have released the E39 520d in the UK, they'd have sold more cars.

Indeed, I've been given a ride in one and was shocked when I got out and checked the 520d badge!!!

Still think I'd miss that 530d thump..........

I would agree it doesn't have the thump of a 530d but as a large family car with a smallish engine I was impressed with the pull. In everyday driving its more than you need.

I have this engine in an E90. It's good for everyday driving.
Only downside is it doesn't sound very nice at idle and around town.
The 6-pot diesels are a lot more 'refined'

with 177 bhp on the way, where does that put the 525d? other than being a six other than a four, its going to be hard to justify the extra spend...

Current line up: 520d = 163; 525d = 177
New line up 520d = 177; 525d = 197

If anything, there's less difference now...

You can do that easily by remapping/chipping (third party: DMS, eMaps, Superchips, ...). I doubt BMW will be willing or able to retrofit your car with the new model's spec, or that you'd be willing to pay the price.

However, I'm not sure I understand what you miss. The E39 525d had 165 bhp, so same power as the current E60 520d, and by all accounts the 2 litre engine pulls like a train. Whatever you do, it will never give you 6 cylinders. So, if what you are missing is the smoothness, nothing doing.

Quick Reply: 520d is a great car!
