indeed, September 2007.

I have an E60LCI 520d from May 2007 and it has the old engine management (among other things the engine doesn't stop when I'm idling at a traffic light).

(I knew this upfront though - I couldn't wait until September to get the car)

Thanks for the info.I hope you are pleased with your 520d.Is it manual or automatic? You have it over a year now, maybe you would be kind enough to share your experience of performance, economy, drivability. Was it worth purchasing? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I don?t have a 520d, but there are always very positive reflections on this ride. I know a driver from the german forum, who has a 750i and when his ride was at the dealer he had for 2 days the new 520d (177 HP). He said, that when he saw the 520d, he thought it will be funny for a V8-Driver to try a R4-Diesel. He wrote a nice review on the forum. The second guy bouht his 520d after he had a X5 4.4i - and he is enthusiastic about it.

I think if you don?t go very often on the german Autobahn, so you don?t need a bigger engine. And if the sound doesn?t bother, so go for it. The consumption should be less than 8 Liter / 100 km with the automatic transmission.

ciao Martin

My Ride: 520D M Sport Manual, Media Package, Dakota Grey leather, USB, Folding mirrors, Carbon Black.
Post

I have had my 520d since march 2008, it is the 177bhp version, fully loaded with M Sport kit SAT Nav, USB, folding mirrors etc. I changed from a 4 year old 330i to the 520 because l wanted the benefit of the fuel efficiency of the 2 litre diesel engine. I shopped around and found the 520d the most efficient at 5L/100km. Before l test drove it, l thought it would be slow and sluggish, hence l was well impressed by its agility. It is not 550i fast, but it would nonetheless get you up to 145mph on the motor way. For my daily commute, that is in excess of what l need. The Audi, Benz, Jaguar and Saab 2 litre cars could only manage about 135mph tops.
One misconception that most people have of the 520d is that it is an entry level 5 series, not true, it is a 5 series for sensible people who want good fuel economy at the same time have reasonable performance and the great 5 series comfort and quality package. Even if you drive it briskly up the motorway, you would easily get over 600 miles to a full tank. That is about 260 mile over what l was getting from my 330i.

It is simply a sensible car for a fuel conscious 5 series lover.

I downgraded (out of my own will - even had to pay on top of trading in) from a 535d to a 520d. My motivation was that fact that my 535d had a terrible range, so I would just be spending too much time at the gas stations. the 520d is amazing (for the little it consumes). In the city, I save about 3,5l compared to my 535d (8l vs. 11,5l), which gvies me about 300km more in range. The automatic on my 520d is far more superior than the 535d, which makes driving more pleasant! On the whole, i am happy with the downgrading.. I am expecting the consumption to improve - currently i only have 2500km on the clock..

IN The UK it was October 2007 from what i recall, i know because my Brother in law bought the 520d (also a member here)
and he has this, he got delivery in dec 2007, and he gets a stonking 59 Mpg in TOWN, Thats right in TOWN, highway/Motorway would be more for sure.

Sometimes i wish i had that engine, especially with the Ridiculous price of fuel here now.

?1.29 a litre in US Dollars this would be $2.51 - A LITRE NOT A GALLON

I have a 520d LCI ("old" engine, built in May '07) and I'm loving it.

I have driven almost any modern diesel car and BMW's 2 litre diesel is one of the smoothest and most powerful. The 520d is absolutely NOT underpowered, just don't expect sportscar performance.

You can't go wrong.

Let us know how you like the 520d. I hope your car will be as trouble free as mine and that you'll enjoy it as much as I do. You'll see that HP figures don't say much. The 520d is much faster and smoother than for example a 170hp VW Passat, not to mention the huge difference in comfort and build quality. And yes you can compare them 1 by 1 as they both have base prices of €50K over here.

If I would live in the US where cars and fuel are almost for free (yes, even today), I would go for a 535i, but in Europe and especially in Holland the 520d is the most logical and sensible choice IMO.
