Hi all,

I need some basic help, I'm looking to add a RPI scoop to my car (520d).

This is going to sound really stupid, but I don't think my car has air inlet for the turbo! - Logically speaking, this doesn't seem right since turbo's need air to work but in this case because its only a small unit maybe it doesn't?

If I look through the front grills, I can see the holes on the (left and right) side of the support beam, where air intake 'should' be, but mine are covered up! On the left side of the engine, I can see the (what I think is) air duct going towards the radiator on the left side. Another thing is there isn't an airfilter box like you have in the petrol engines.

I'm hoping that someone could clarify how the above points!

I'll try and get some pictures of the engine to show what I mean later today.

Thanks.

A diesel without a turbo? It has been years since I drove one, it was almost faster to push the car then be in it

As with the 525d - 535d, there is no separate airbox as such. See the link below which will show you in the diagram.

Trevorken,

+1 Could you image driving a big heavy car like this if it didnt have a turbo.

Im sure its has a turbo, as there is the turbo hiss sound and I swear this thing wouldn't move without one!

Here are the pictures- and it looks like the RPI scoop will work fine. But what im still confused about it why there isnt an air-filter box?!

Edit: Thanks for that information! That helpful, but then what about dirty air, does the turbo just 'deal with it'?

Thanks.

It does have a turbo, and it also has an airfilter. Its a long cylinder type filter on the left of the engine.

Your car would last about 5 minutes without an airfilter.

Your turbo uses ambiant air, filted air and exhaust gases!! The turbocharger is bolted to the exhaust manifold of the engine. The exhaust from the cylinders spins the turbine, which works like a gas turbine engine. The turbine is connected by a shaft to the compressor, which is located between the air filter and the intake manifold, it draws air from your last picture!!

Looks like it would need a scoop that is like the 550i one but in reverse. The standard M5 passenger side scoop wont work though.
